The "International Day of Action for Rivers" is marked on 14th March every year to highlight the importance of rivers in our lives. The day also aims to raise awareness about equitable access to clean and flowing water.

This year marks the 25th edition of the International Day of Action for Rivers.  The day also creates awareness about how freshwater ecosystems like rivers are increasingly being polluted due to human activities.

History : The International Day of Action for Rivers was first marked in March 1997, according to the official website of the International Rivers organisation. In the first International Meeting of Dams Affected Peoples held in Curitaba, Brazil, the International Day of Action Against Dams and For Rivers, Water and Life was adopted by representatives from over 20 countries. It was also decided that the day would be marked on 14 March, as it was Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams.

Since then, the International Day of Action for Rivers has been celebrated all over the world.

Significance : The day is significant since it raises importance about how rivers sustain human lives. It also highlights how pollution and industrial activities after threatened these water bodies. Freshwater ecosystems like rivers are a crucial source for clean water for drinking and irrigation.

However excessive construction, encroachment activities and dumping industrial sewage into rives have resulted in these water bodies becoming polluted, thus impacting communities who depend on them for their survival. For sustainable development of the planet, it is important that river bodies are protected from such activities. The International Day of Action for Rivers aims to raise awareness about these issues and how they ultimately affect humans.

Theme 2022 : These bio-diverse ecosystems are also one of the most threatened in the world. This year, the International Rivers organisation has stated that it will mark the day by celebrating “the importance of rivers to biodiversity.

Celebrations : On this day, several activities such as river clean-ups, paddleboard celebrations and webinars are organised across countries. Several volunteer activities to raise awareness about what more can be done to protect river bodies are also held on this day..

Former "Zambian" President Rupiah Banda, 85, died on Friday(11th Mar 2022) after a battle with colon cancer, his son told Reuters.

"He died around 1900 hours today," said Andrew, Banda's second eldest child, confirming the death.

Banda, Zambia's fourth president who was in power from 2008 to 2011, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and had been receiving medical treatment.

He held senior diplomatic posts under first president Kenneth Kaunda before being eventually appointed as a vice president in 2006 by then President Levy Mwanawasa.

Banda took over the presidential reins in mid-2008 in an acting capacity when Mwanawasa suffered a stroke. Banda then narrowly won October elections the same year on a ruling party ticket.

But his tenure was marred by allegations of graft and in 2013, Zambia’s parliament stripped Banda of immunity from prosecution, clearing the way for investigators to arrest him for corruption-related offences.

Banda stood accused of abuse of office, corrupt acquisition of public property and misappropriation of public funds involving more than $11 million during his tenure as president, but was never convicted in a court of law and didn't serve any jail time..

India may be pushing for ‘atmanirbharta (indigenous development)’ in defence equipment — the central government earmarked 68 percent of the capital budget for 2022-23 for domestic manufacturing industries — but the country remains the largest importer of arms globally, a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has shown.

Most of India’s defence imports come from Russia, the report says.

However, according to SIPRI’s Trends in International Arms Transfers, 2021 — published this month — India’s total volume of imports fell by 21 per cent from 2012-16, which could be a reflection of the push to manufacture arms and weapons systems indigenously.

The volume of global arms transfers between 2017 and 2021 was 4.6 per cent less than during the 2012-16 period, the report says. The 2017-21 global arms transfers were, however, 3.9 per cent more than for the 2007-11 period, it adds.

The five largest arms importers in the 2017-21 period were India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Australia, and China, while the five biggest exporters of arms in the same period were the United States, Russia, France, China, and Germany..

Largest Arms Exporters in 2017-21 :

* USA, with 39% share, retained its standing as the world’s largest arms exporters during 2017-21.
* Russia (19%), France (11%), China (4.6%) and Germany (4.5%) were among the top 5 largest exporters respectively.
* India was 23rd largest exporter during 2017-21, with a share of just 0.2% of the global exports.

Tata Sons chief "Natrajan Chandrasekarana" will be the chairman of Air India. His appointment was approved at a board meeting in Delhi on Monday(14th MAr 2022), say people in the know.

General Insurance Corporation former CMD Alice GeeVarghese Vaidyan will be inducted on the airline board as an independent director.

AI founder J R D Tata remained the airline’s chief for decades after its nationalisation. He was chairman till February 1978 when the Morarji Desai government moved him from the post.

In 1982, the Indira Gandhi government reappointed JRD to the board of Air-India (as it was written then with the hyphen). His successor, Ratan Tata, was AI chairman from 1986-87 till early 1990.

Now after 32 years, the head of Tata Group is again the captain of AI with the Maharaja back in the group and waiting for a turnaround — along with his flyers — at the hand of the founder.

Chandra’s priority is to get a professional CEO for the airline, who can then put a team of top notch aviation personnel for turning around the fortunes of Air India — seen as one of the most challenging turnarounds in contemporary aviation.

Industry insiders caution the Tatas should not make the same mistake that the government did when the latter ran AI.

“Under government control, clueless bureaucrats who had little or no knowledge of aviation — with a few honourable exceptions — ran the airline. The lack of professionals running AI led to its ruin. We get nostalgic about JRD era of AI but that was then. The Tata’s second stint in aviation, that started with JVs AirAsia India taking off in 2014 and then Vistara a year later, has not been profitable so far. The people at the top of Tata JVs are not dyed-in-the-wool aviation professionals and the effect is showing,” said an old-timer who did not wish to be named.

The formerly state-run airline’s wait to get an aviation veteran as CEO continues as former Turkish Airlines chairman Ilker Ayci recently declined the position of AI MD & CEO...
