The fourth edition of ‘Nadi Utsav,’ a celebration of India’s rich river culture, begins today on September 22nd and will continue until September 24th, 2023. Organized by the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) of IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts) in collaboration with the Janapada Sampada Division, this year’s ‘Nadi Utsav’ promises to be an enlightening and culturally immersive experience. The event will be hosted in the vibrant city of Delhi, situated on the banks of the sacred River Yamuna.

Rivers: The Lifeblood of Indian Culture :

In the tapestry of Indian culture, rivers occupy a central and revered position. They are not just a source of life but also a symbol of spiritual significance. Rivers have played a pivotal role in shaping civilizations, with countless cities, villages, and towns thriving along their banks. Rivers are not just geographical features; they are an integral part of our cultural identity.

The Vision Behind ‘Nadi Utsav’ :

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), an institution dedicated to promoting art and culture under the Ministry of Culture, has been the driving force behind ‘Nadi Utsav.’ This noble initiative was conceived by Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi to raise awareness and sensitize people about the ecological and environmental importance of rivers.

A Journey Through the Previous Editions :

‘Nadi Utsav’ embarked on its journey in 2018, with its inaugural event in Nashik, situated on the banks of the River Godavari. Subsequent editions were held in Vijayawada, on the banks of the River Krishna, and Munger, along the River Ganga. Each edition aimed to celebrate the unique cultural heritage associated with these rivers.

Distinguished Guests and Patrons :

The fourth ‘Nadi Utsav’ boasts an impressive lineup of guests and dignitaries. The chief guest for the event is Hon’ble Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal. The guest of honor is the renowned philosopher and scholar Acharya Shrivatsa Goswami, while the head and spiritual guru of Parmarth Niketan, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, serves as a special guest.

A Multifaceted Three-Day Celebration :

The three-day ‘Nadi Utsav’ will kick off at the Umang Conference Hall, IGNCA. The event promises a diverse array of activities, including:

Scholarly Discussions : Numerous discussion sessions will delve into topics such as the mention of rivers in ancient texts, cultural heritage along rivers, and rivers in folk and cultural traditions.

Film Screenings : A total of 18 films will be screened during the event, with six produced by IGNCA. These films offer unique perspectives on river culture and its significance.

Puppet Shows : A highlight of the event will be the puppet show titled ‘The Yamuna Gatha,’ performed by Puran Bhat, which promises to captivate audiences with its storytelling.

Book Fair : A book fair during the three-day event will feature a wide range of publications related to rivers and the environment, providing an opportunity for attendees to explore and acquire knowledge.

Documentary Film Awards : Five out of the 18 documentary films screened at the event will be awarded. These films, from various states of India, offer diverse insights into the importance of rivers.

Exhibitions : The event will host three types of exhibitions: ‘Sanjhi’ exhibition showcasing 16 Ghats of the country, a photography exhibition related to river civilization, and an exhibition of paintings created by school children of Delhi, reflecting their thoughts on rivers.

Cultural Performances : The cultural program will include mesmerizing performances by folk singer Chandan Tiwari from Bihar, along with Ms. Shweta Devendra and her team from Bhopal, presenting Narmada Stuti and Dashavataram.

‘Nadi Utsav’ is more than just an event; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the rivers that have shaped India’s cultural tapestry. In the fast-paced modern world, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with our roots and express gratitude to these lifelines that have sustained us for millennia.

Correct Answer :   Canada

As diplomatic tensions with Canada continued to rise, India on Thursday (September 21, 2023) suspended visa services in that country.

The announcement was made on the visa facility website of the Indian High Commission in Canada.

A day earlier, on Wednesday (20th Sep 2023), New Delhi had advised all Indian nationals in Canada, as well as those who were planning to visit that country, to “exercise utmost caution”, given the “growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada”.

Exactly who in Canada is impacted by the suspension of visa services?

Canadian nationals who intend to visit India, but who do not have an Indian visa yet, will be impacted. This group would include mainly Canadian tourists, business travellers, and students, as well as family members of Indian citizens travelling to visit relatives and friends.

Tour operators in India had been expecting a large number of tourists from Canada to visit this winter. Foreign tourist arrivals have been impacted from the 2019-20 season onward as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath, and it is widely anticipated that the coming season will be busy. Some operators were already bracing for cancellations from Canada on Thursday (September 21, 2023).

Will Indian-origin Canadians with OCI cards also be impacted?

* No, Indian-origin Canadians who have a valid Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, or a valid long-term visa for India, will not be impacted by the suspension of visa services.

* OCI cards allow holders lifetime entry into India, and to live and work in the country indefinitely.

What happens to Canadians who already have a valid Indian visa, and may be planning to visit India at this point?

* Canadians with a valid Indian visa will not be impacted by the Indian government’s latest decision. As of now, their visa stands. They have not been cancelled yet.

For how long is this situation going to last?

* As of now, visa services have been temporarily suspended. Where the situation goes here onward will depend on the way political and diplomatic relations between the two countries evolve.

* The current crisis began on Monday (Canada time) after Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a “potential link” between “agents of the Government of India” and the killing of Khalistani separatist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada in June. Canada expelled a senior Indian diplomat, and India retaliated on Tuesday by expelling a senior Canadian diplomat. There has been no thaw yet.

Could Canada reciprocate with its own curbs on Indians seeking Canadian visas?

* Canada has so far said that their visa services remain open. But that can change, if they decide to take reciprocal measures. Again, what happens will depend on the way the political and diplomatic situation unfolds hereafter..

On the lines of civilian awards, Government of India will now recognise scientists with Rashtriya Vigyan Puruskar under four categories

* Vigyan Ratna
* Vigyan Shri
* Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar
* Vigyan Team

said Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh during Indian Express Idea Exchange Monday (18th Sep 2023).

This comes days after the government released the finalised list of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardees that was held back for a year. The highest honour for young scientists retains the name Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.

Vigyan Ratna will recognise the lifetime achievement of scientists, Vigyan Shri will recognise distinguished contributions to a field, Vigyan Yuva Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar will encourage young scientists who have made exceptional contributions in their field, and Vigyan Team will recognise teams of three or more. The awards will commence in 2024.

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be awarded in 13 domains – Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology and Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology. “It may be ensured that each domain/field is represented. Adequate representation of women may also be ensured,” a government document said.

There will only be three Vigyan Ratnas awarded yearly : 25 Vigyan Shri, 25 Vigyan Yuva, and 3 Vigyan Team. Only Vigyan Yuva will have an age limit of 45 years.

Nominations for the awards will be accepted every year between January 14 and February 28, which is recognised as National Science Day. The awards will be announced on National Technology Day, May 11. On the other hand, the award ceremony will be held every year on the recently announced National Space Day, August 23, to mark the day India’s Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon.

All internal awards, except for one named after Homi Jehangir Bhabha given by the Department of Atomic Energy, “have been dispensed,” according to information with The Indian Express. The internal award will be given to 30 recipients in the form of certificates.

A committee under the chairmanship of the principal scientific adviser will select the awardees. The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Committee will be constituted of all secretaries of all six science departments, four presidents selected from science and engineering academies, and six distinguished scientists and technologists from different fields of science.

This committee will be constituted annually, with the committee members ineligible for the award during their tenure. The awards processes will be carried out by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for the first two years and will be taken over by the newly instituted National Research Foundation.

This is in line with the government’s effort to “rationalise” awards in science and technology. Dr Singh said: “We have not discontinued awards, we have rationalised them. We have reduced the numbers to add to the sanctity and value of the awards. After all, a coveted award has to be coveted.”..

World Alzheimer’s Day, observed on September 21 every year, is a global initiative aimed at increasing awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and reducing the stigma associated with it and other forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent type of dementia, accounts for 60-70% of dementia cases. It is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, cognitive function, and behavior, gradually impacting an individual’s daily life. This article delves into the significance of World Alzheimer’s Day 2023, its theme, and essential information about Alzheimer’s disease.

World Alzheimer’s Day 2023 Theme : “Never too early, never too late”

In 2023, the theme for Alzheimer’s Day is ‘Never Too Early, Never Too Late.’ This theme emphasises the crucial importance of identifying risk factors and taking proactive steps to reduce those risks.

Significance of World Alzheimer’s Day :

World Alzheimer’s Day holds significant importance for several reasons :

* Raising Awareness : One of its primary objectives is to raise global awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This awareness is crucial for early diagnosis, effective treatment, and support for individuals and families affected by dementia.

* Eliminating Stigma : World Alzheimer’s Day strives to eliminate the stigma and misconceptions surrounding dementia. This stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help or disclosing their condition, hindering early intervention and support.

History of World Alzheimer’s Day :

World Alzheimer’s Day traces its roots to September 21, 1994, when it was inaugurated by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The launch took place in Edinburgh to commemorate the 10th anniversary of ADI, which was founded in 1984. Since then, this day has been dedicated to global efforts to combat Alzheimer’s disease and promote dementia awareness.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease : Here are some essential facts about Alzheimer’s disease:

* Progressive Brain Disorder : Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that leads to a gradual decline in memory, thinking abilities, behavior, and social skills. These symptoms worsen over time and interfere with daily activities.

* Common Symptoms : Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include memory loss, difficulty performing routine tasks, speech problems, personality changes, mood swings, repetitive behavior, forgetting names of family members, misplacing items, and trouble expressing thoughts.

* Distinction from Dementia : While Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia, it is essential to differentiate between the two. Dementia is an umbrella term encompassing various cognitive impairments, while Alzheimer’s disease is a specific subtype characterized by distinct pathological changes in the brain.

* No Cure, But Management : As of now, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, medications and therapies are available to manage symptoms, improve the quality of life for affected individuals, and slow the progression of the disease.

* Risk Factors : Common risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease include age (typically affecting those over 65), family history of the disease, head injuries, depression, traumatic brain injury, and smoking. Identifying and managing these risk factors is essential for dementia prevention.
