Nagasaki Day is observed every year on August 9th to promote peace among nations and to create awareness about the devastating results of nuclear weapons. The 4.5-ton plutonium bomb code name 'Fat Man' was dropped at 11.02 am on August 9, 1945, by the US B029 bomber Bockscar. When the bomb hit the ground, the temperature of the surface reached 4,000 degrees Celsius, and radioactive rain poured down. This claimed the lives of over 80,000 people living in the hills surrounding the city and nearby by the end of 1945.

This attack forced the nation to kneel down during the Second World War. After six days after the Nagasaki bombing, the Japanese Emperor Gyokuon-Hoso's speech was broadcast to the nation, addressing the surrender.

Both the bombings claimed the lives of over 140,000 people out of the total estimated population of 3.5 lakh. Later, the death toll kept rising due to injuries and radiation-related deaths.

The bomb named 'Fat Man', which destroyed the city of Nagasaki was more powerful than the bomb 'Little Boy' used in Hiroshima. It weighed around 10,000 pounds and was built to produce a 22-kiloton blast. Somehow, the effect of the blast at Nagasaki was mitigated, and destruction was limited to 2.6 square miles because the city lies in the valleys between mountains..
