Computers - General Knowledge Questions
A)
Intel
B)
IBM
C)
Motorola
D)
AMD

Correct Answer :   Motorola

Motorola company produces processors for the Apple Macintosh.

The Macintosh (pronounced as /ˈmækɪnËŒtɒʃ/ MAK-in-tosh; branded as Mac since 1998) is a family of personal computers designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple Inc. since January 1984. The original Macintosh was the first mass-market personal computer that featured a graphical user interface, built-in screen and mouse.

Macintosh systems still found success in education and desktop publishing and kept Apple as the second-largest PC manufacturer for the next decade. In the early 1990s, Apple introduced models such as the Macintosh LC II and Color Classic which were price-competitive with Wintel machines at the time. However, the introduction of Windows 3.1 and Intel's Pentium processor which beat the Motorola 68040 in most benchmarks gradually took market share from Apple, and by the end of 1994 Apple was relegated to third place as Compaq became the top PC manufacturer. Even after the transition to the superior PowerPC-based Power Macintosh line in the mid-1990s, the falling prices of commodity PC components, poor inventory management with the Macintosh Performa, and the release of Windows 95 saw the Macintosh user base decline.

A)

C)
Magnetic bubbles
D)
Both (b) and (c)

Correct Answer :   Both (b) and (c)

Bubble memory is a type of non-volatile computer memory that uses a thin film of a magnetic material to hold small magnetized areas, known as bubbles or domains, each storing one bit of data. ... In operation, bubble memories are similar to delay line memory systems.

Correct Answer :   Super computer

ILLIAC (Illinois Automatic Computer) was a series of supercomputers built at a variety of locations, some at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In all, five computers were built in this series between 1951 and 1974. Some more modern projects also use the name.

A)
Autoboot
B)
Warmboot
C)

D)
Bubble

Correct Answer :   Autoboot

Autoboot is used to make a programs run when the computer is switched on.

To boot a computer is to load an operating system into the computer's main memory or random access memory (RAM). Once the operating system is loaded (and, for example, on a PC, you see the initial Windows or Mac desktop screen), it's ready for users to run applications.

Booting is what happens when a computer starts. ... When you boot a computer, your processor looks for instructions in system ROM (the BIOS) and does them. They normally 'wake up' peripheral equipment and search for the boot device. The boot device either loads the operating system or gets it from someplace else.

A)
Slower than magnetic tape
B)
Direct access devices
C)
Sequential access devices
D)
Used only in mainframe computers

Correct Answer :   Direct access devices

A direct-access storage device (DASD) is another name for secondary storage devices that store data in discrete locations with a unique address, such as hard disk drives, optical drives and most magnetic storage devices. A direct-access storage device (DASD) is a secondary storage device in which "each physical record has a discrete location and a unique address."

DASD, pronounced DAZ-dee (Direct access storage device), is a general term for magnetic disk storage devices. The term has historically been used in the mainframe and minicomputer (mid-range computer) environments and is sometimes used to refer to hard disk drives for personal computers.

Hard disks hold more data and are faster than floppy disks. A hard disk, for example, can store anywhere from 10 to more than 100 gigabytes, whereas most floppies have a maximum storage capacity of 1.4 megabytes. A single hard disk usually consists of several platters.
