Benjamin Netanyahu was on Thursday (29th Dec 2022) sworn-in as Israel's prime minister for a sixth time, leading the Jewish state's most right-wing government to date.

Netanyahu, 73, already Israel's longest-serving Prime Minister, has the support of 63 lawmakers in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament). In the house, 54 lawmakers voted against his government.

He returned as prime minister with the formation of his sixth government, which is composed of a number of far-right allies, a prospect that many fear would put the new government at odds with large parts of its own population and its closest allies abroad.

The lawmakers supporting the new government are all right-wing, including Netanyahu's Likud party supported by the ultra-orthodox Shas, United Torah Judaism, the far-right Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionist Party, and Noam.

Shortly before the confidence vote for Israel's 37th government, the Knesset elected Likud lawmaker Amir Ohana as its the new Speaker.

A former justice minister and public security minister in past governments, Ohana is the Knesset’s first openly gay speaker.

Netanyahu announced the appointment of 31 ministers and three deputy ministers.

Three government ministries - defence, education and welfare - will have two ministers serving at the same time. However, women remain in the minority with only five ministerial posts, marking a new low in their representation.

Earlier, outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid in his address to the Knesset listed the achievements of his short-lived government, including those of his predecessor and coalition partner Naftali Bennett..

Football great Pele, 82, passed away of cancer on Thursday(29th Dec 2022) in Sao Paulo, his daughter confirmed on Instagram.

Pele had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since had regular treatment. “Inspiration, love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever,” the family statement from the Brazil legend read.

Pele is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games. Nicknamed the Black Pearl, Pele won one Ballon d’Or, a record three World Cups and scored a staggering 1,283 career goals.

He burst onto the international stage as a 17-year-old in the 1958 World Cup, scoring six times in total including twice in the final as Brazil won the title for the first time.

Brazil retained the trophy in 1962, but injury restricted Pele to just a game and a half each in the 1962 edition and 1966 World Cups, with the violent hacking of group opponent Portugal in 1966 leading to his exit from the tournament on a stretcher, vowing never to play in a World Cup again.

Thankfully, he relented in time for Mexico 1970, and lit up television screens worldwide, resplendent in yellow in the first World Cup telecast in colour. Brazil came to the tournament with possibly its greatest-ever line-up and romped unbeaten to its third title.

Pele and Argentine great Diego Maradona, who never faced each other on the pitch, often vied for the title of best footballer in history.

A new British Indian Army Memorial, commemorating the sacrifice of millions of Indian soldiers who fought for the British during the two World Wars, is set to be built in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

* The memorial is visualised as Scotland’s first permanent memorial wall to recognise the service and sacrifice of the British Indian Army during the world wars.

* While stories of the World Wars are deeply ingrained in public consciousness, a whole chapter of history is often overlooked. Over four million British Indian troops served during both Wars combined, seeing action in almost every theatre of War.

* Their contributions were pivotal but they are seldom remembered in Europe in the ways other “white” Commonwealth forces are. Even in India, with anti-colonial nationalism shaping India’s mainstream history, soldiers serving colonial masters have been relegated to relative obscurity.

* World War I was the largest human conflict in history (till that point) spanning from mid 1914 to late 1918.

* It pitted the Allied Powers (including Britain, France and Russia) against the Central Powers including (Germany, Austro-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire). The bulk of the fighting would happen in Europe and West Asia, though regions in Africa and East Asia saw some conflict too.

* Approximately 1.3 million Indian soldiers served in World War One, and over 74,000 of them lost their lives with a comparable number wounded..
