Suhel Ajaz Khan, India’s ambassador to Lebanon, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday(22nd Dec 2022).
 
Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan (IFS: 1997), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Lebanon has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the MEA said in a statement.
 
Suhel Khan is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
 
Khan joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1997, according to MEA. His first foreign assignment was to the Embassy of India, Cairo where between 1999-2001, apart from the other duties at the Embassy, he obtained an Advanced Diploma in the Arabic Language from the American University, Cairo.
 
He later served at the Indian Embassy Damascus, handling Administration, Press and Political Affairs between 2002-2005. His next assignment was as Consul at the Consulate General of India, Jeddah between 2005-2008, where he handled several issues including the Haj matters and Haj arrangements for the Indian pilgrims.
 
Later, Suhel Khan worked as Deputy Secretary in the WANA (West Asia North Africa) Division of the Ministry of External Affairs between 2008-2009 followed by a stint at the Indian High Commission, Islamabad between 2009-2011 where he handled Visa and Consular matters.
 
Between 2011 and 2013, Khan served as Director in the office of Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed.
 
Khan served as a United Nations Pension Board member in 2016 and 2017. He worked at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh between September 2017 and June 2019 as Deputy Chief of Mission, with the personal rank of Ambassador..

Aloke Singh is going to take charge of the Air India Express as new CEO from 1 January, 2023. He is all set to pilot pilot the integrated low cost airline of the Tata group reported on 22 December 2022.
 
Aloke has previously worked in senior positions of Air India and Oman Air. The Air India Express is being created by merging AirAsia India and Air India Express.
 
"The two constituent airlines will continue to have the full complement of regulatory post-holders until the merger is complete but, for now, a single CEO will provide the clarity and singular accountability necessary to navigate the process," Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said in the internal communication.
 
As per the internal communication, current AirAsia India CEO Sunil Bhaskaran will assume the leadership of a new initiative – an aviation training academy.
 
Tata group has been working on consolidating its airline business after taking over loss-making Air India in January this year.
 
On 2 November, Air India said an operational review process is underway to integrate budget carrier AirAsia India with Air India Express and the merger is likely to be completed by the end of 2023.
 
The firm had said the merger is aimed at having a single low-cost carrier for the Air India group. Post-merger, the entity will be branded as Air India Express..

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has become the only Indian to be named in an international list of 50 greatest actors of all time by a prominent British magazine.

The 57-year-old actor is included in Empire magazine's list which also recognises Hollywood giants like Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Anthony Marlon Brando, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson and many others.

* 2012 was also observed as National Mathematics Year. Ramanujan had a wealth of ideas that have transformed and reshaped 20th-century mathematics. These ideas continue to shape the mathematics of the 21st century.
 
Important points on life and work of the Srinivasa Ramanujan :

* Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Tamil Nadu’s Erode to a Brahmin Iyengar family. He had developed a liking for mathematics at a very young age, mastering trigonometry at 12 and was eligible for a scholarship at the Government Arts College in Kumbakonam.

* He studied at the Government College in Kumbakonam in 1903. Due to his dislike for non-mathematical subjects, he failed exams there. He had enrolled in Madras’ Pachaiyappa College at the age of 14.

* In 1912, Ramanujan started working as a clerk in the Madras Port Trust. There, his mathematical genius was recognised by some of his colleagues and one of them referred him to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University. He met Hardy in 1913, after which he went to Trinity College.

* In 1916, Ramanujan received his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. He went on to publish several papers on his subject with Hardy’s help. The two even collaborated on several joint projects.

* Ramanujan was elected to the London Mathematical Society in 1917. Next year, he was elected to the prestigious Royal Society for his research on Elliptic Functions and theory of numbers. He was also the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of the Trinity College.

* Despite not receiving any formal training in pure maths, Ramanujan made impactful contribution to the discipline in his short life. His areas of work include infinite series, continued fractions, number theory and mathematical analysis.

* He also made notable contributions like the hypergeometric series, the Riemann series, the elliptic integrals, the theory of divergent series, and the functional equations of the zeta function. He is said to have discovered his own theorems and independently compiled 3,900 results.

* In 1919, Ramanujan returned to India. A year later, on April 26, he breathed his last owing to deteriorating health. He was just 32 years old. His biography ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ by Robert Kanigel depicts his life and journey to fame.

* A film of the same name was released in 2015 in which British-Indian actor Dev Patel played Ramanujan. The 2015 movie ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity” was released based on Srinivasa Ramanujan’s biography. The film shed light on Ramanujan’s childhood in India, his time in Britain, and his journey to becoming the great mathematician..
