Professor Narayan Pradhan has been selected for the 31st GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for his outstanding contribution in the field of material sciences, the KK Birla foundation said in an official statement on Monday(14th Mar 2022).
 
Instituted in 1991, the award recognises eminent Indian scientists below the age of 50 for their original and outstanding contributions to any branch of science. It carries a cash prize of ₹5 lakh. The recipient is chosen by a selection board, whose present head is professor Chandrima Shaha, the president of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
 
Pradhan, a member of the faculty at the School of Material Sciences, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, graduated from Odisha’s Fakir Mohan College and did his master’s in chemistry from the Ravenshaw University, Cuttack. He went on to get a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, in 2001. He did his post-doctoral research at Israel’s Ben Gurion University and the University of Arkansas in the US. In 2007, he joined the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science as an assistant professor.
 
Pradhan’s research work focused on understanding the chemistry and physics of light-emitting semiconductor nanocrystals. His research group has significantly contributed to the surface construction of the newly emerged light-emitting halide perovskite nanocrystals, which are expected to be the next-generation lighting materials for photovoltaics and making LEDs. He has provided his expertise in crystal modulations to help design new shapes of these tiny lighting materials.
 
A fellow at the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, Pradhan has been a recipient of the LNJ Bhilwara Nanoscience award, the DST Swarnajayanti Fellowship award, the DST Nanoscience Young Career award, and the Oxford Nanoscientist award.

A Bangladeshi environmental lawyer "Rizwana Hasan" has been selected for the International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award for 2022. She is among the 12 women from around the world who will be honoured by the US Department of State with the award for showing exceptional courage and leadership to make a difference in their communities.
 
US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken will host the awards ceremony on March 14 in a virtual ceremony to honour the 12 women selected for the award.
 
Rizwana Hasan is a lawyer who has demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in her mission to protect the environment and defend the dignity and rights of the marginalised Bangladeshis. Over the last 20 years, she has taken up landmark legal cases to change the dynamic of development in Bangladesh to include a people-centred focus on environmental justice, said a press statement issued by the US Department of State.
 
Rizwana Hasan is the Chief Executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association. She has successfully taken up cases against deforestation, pollution, unregulated ship breaking, and illegal land development.
 
She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2012 for her activism. She continues to work in the courtroom to combat environmental degradation and the local effects of climate change, despite significant resistance from powerful interests and threats of violence to herself and her family, said the press statement.
 
The International Women of Courage (IWOC) award was established in 2007 by the US Department of State to honour women of exceptional courage, strength and leadership who work to bring change to their communities. Till now 170 women from 80 countries have been honoured under the IWOC programme.

Known as the ‘Hit Girl’ of Indian cinema, Asha Parekh had appeared in many commercially successful films throughout her career.
 
She was the highest-paid actor (female) of her time and was one of the most successful actors (female) of the 1960s and 1970s. She is considered one of the most influential actors of all time in Hindi cinema.
 
Her most iconic films include: ‘Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai’ (1961), ‘Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon’ (1963), ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), ‘Baharon Ke Sapne’ (1967), ‘Pyar Ka Mausam’ (1969), ‘Kati Patang’ (1970) and Caravan (1971) among several others.
 
She also did a cameo in Nasir Hussain’s film ‘Manzil Manzil’ (1984) with whom she had earlier done 6 films.
 
In 1992, she was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contribution to the field of cinema. She is also the recipient of the Living Legend Award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
 
Parekh was the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) of India. Currently, she concentrates on her dance academy Kara Bhavan and the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santa Cruz, Mumbai, named in her honour because of her many humanitarian contributions..
