The West Midlands will host the 2025 Kabaddi World Cup, announced the World Kabaddi Federation (WKF) on Saturday(12th Nov 2022).

The UK(United Kingdom) region will become the first destination outside of Asia to host the sport’s most prestigious global tournament, which will feature the world’s best kabaddi players from leading men’s and women’s teams, including India, Iran and Pakistan. The tournament will take place across the West Midlands during the first quarter of 2025.

As per a press release from WKF, the news was revealed as part of a West Midlands trade mission to India (November 6-12), led by the region’s Mayor Andy Street and Portfolio Lead for Economy and Innovation at the West Midlands Combined Authority, Cllr Ian Brookfield.

The week-long mission will create opportunities for bilateral trade and investment between India, the West Midlands and wider UK.

Kabaddi is the fastest-growing sport in South Asia and the second most popular after cricket. Originating in India some 5,000 years ago, the contact sport sees teams broken down into raiders and blockers, with the aim of scoring points by entering opposition territory, tagging an opponent and making it back into their own half without being tackled to the ground. It is now played in more than 50 countries, having grown in stature as a mainstream sport.

The 2025 Kabaddi World Cup will be organized by England Kabaddi, Scottish Kabaddi, and the British Kabaddi League. The West Midlands Growth Company (WMGC), the region’s official economic development agency, will support and champion the event to ensure its impact is felt across the West Midlands and the United Kingdom(UK).

The World Cup will provide a further opportunity to build business and trade links between the West Midlands, UK and India, complementing WMGC’s work with the award-winning West Midlands India Partnership. Plans for the tournament include a Business and Trade event, showcasing the best of Indian businesses in the West Midlands.

Ashok Das, President of the World Kabaddi Federation and England Kabaddi, said : “Awarding the 2025 Kabaddi World Cup to the West Midlands in the UK was a straightforward decision and a very exciting milestone in the global growth and expansion of the sport across Europe.”..

India's premier batsman Virat Kohli became the first batter in history to score 4000 runs in T20 Internationals. Kohli reached the milestone against England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide on Thursday(10th Nov 2022).

Kohli, remarkably, raced to the magnificent milestone while batting at an average of 53.34. He is the only batter in the shortest format to average over 50 and reached the milestone in 115 matches. His achievement became even more special as he played the role of a sheet anchor in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals vs England after India were put into bat.

The talismanic batter contributed 50 runs off 40 deliveries to his team's tally in the all-important semi-finals. His innings which enabled India to reach a challenging total of 168/4 was laced with four boundaries and one hit over the fence.

Earlier, against Bangladesh in Adelaide, Kohli became the all-time leading run-scorer in men's T20 World Cups, breaking Mahela Jayawardene's 2014 record of 1016 runs. Kohli needed 42 runs to surpass 4000 T20I runs and did so with a boundary off Adil Rashid in the 15th over of India's innings.

The Indian star batter was the only cricketer to be named Player of the Tournament in both the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups.

Kohli has also amassed the most runs in T20I cricket history. He is ahead of skipper Rohit Sharma, Martin Guptill, Babar Azam, and Paul Stirling on the list. Kohli has a strike rate of around 140 and an average of more than 50 right now.

Kohli is also the leading scorer in the T20 World Cup 2022, having scored over 296 runs in six matches. Even while openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul failed to get going consistently, the star batter has served as an anchor for India's batting line-up. .
