The company expressed concern about potential risks such as metadata exposure, unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks.

With Beeper Mini's shutdown, Apple's resistance to bringing iMessage to Android has long sparked debate. Users cited security concerns. However, Apple has announced support for RCS, a new standard promoting better cross-platform communication, including with Android.

Beeper, led by Eric Migicovsky, creator of Pebble smartwatch, is working to overcome Apple's restrictions. Beeper Mini, designed to connect with Apple services securely, aims to provide encrypted messaging between Android and iOS.

Beeper Cloud, a variant, operates using third-party servers. Migicovsky disputes security concerns, emphasizing encryption. Although Beeper Mini operates on a subscription model, Apple remains cautious, citing potential security risks. Previous attempts, such as Sunbird, to enable iMessage on Android have faced shutdowns by Apple.

It is expected that Apple will begin supporting RCS in the near future; however, it has consistently resisted enabling easier communication between iOS and Android users.

A spokesperson for Apple has expressed the belief that the adoption of iMessage on Android devices will remove the "obstacle" of iPhone families providing their children with Android phones. However, Apple will be required to allow third-party app stores in the region with the forthcoming Digital Markets Act in the EU, further expanding users' choices.
