Microsoft has announced that it will be launching an extended security update (ESU) programme for Windows 10 after the support for the operating system (OS) ends in October 2025.
Microsoft has just dropped a bombshell for Windows 10 users worldwide, announcing that the operating system will no longer be available for free after October 14, 2025. This significant move means that users who wish to continue using Windows 10 beyond this date will need to subscribe to Microsoft's cloud-based service, Windows 365.
The company is taking a firm stance on the transition, emphasizing that the support for Windows 10 ending, and users will no longer receive bug fixes, security updates, time zone adjustments, or technical support.
The tech giant is unmistakably steering users towards the adoption of Windows 11 as the natural successor to Windows 10. In a cautionary note, Microsoft urged organizations to refrain from running unsupported software, citing potential security vulnerabilities and compliance breaches inherent in legacy systems.
For users not immediately inclined to embrace Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) initiative tailored for Windows 10. This program empowers users to subscribe to an annual package of security updates, with the option for renewal over a three-year period. While Microsoft strongly advocates for the transition to Windows 11, the ESU provides a viable solution for circumstances where an immediate shift is logistically challenging.
It's worth noting that ESUs will exclusively cover critical and essential security updates, with the subscription excluding novel features, non-security updates at user request, and design alterations. Additionally, technical support beyond the ESU scope will not be provided.
A silver lining exists for Windows 365 users: Microsoft has assured that ESUs will be extended to Windows 10 devices connecting to a Cloud PC running Windows 11 at no extra charge.
