Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools have a lot of potential in transforming industries around the world. While ChatGPT and similar services can boost productivity for many employees, some will also end up losing their jobs.
According to Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, the development of AI could provide the "most tremendous leap forward" for people's quality of life.
What will AI do to jobs?
At the same time, he warned that it would be "crazy not to be a little afraid of AI" and its potential to trigger "disinformation problems or economic shocks."
In a new interview with The Atlantic, Altman opposed the idea that AI will only have a positive impact on workers, suggesting that the fears related to AI technologies are very real.
"A lot of people working on AI pretend that it's only going to be good; it's only going to be a supplement; no one is ever going to be replaced," he said. "Jobs are definitely going to go away, full stop."
ChatGPT and similar tools like Google's Bard have caused some paranoia for workers, especially in creative industries.
While many people believe that AI can never truly replace humans and that AI would make a valuable assistant to humans, some others have been more pessimistic about its effects on employment.
The truth is that even if not all jobs are replaced, many will simply disappear. In March, Goldman Sachs predicted that 300 million full-time jobs across the world could be disrupted, if not replaced, by AI.
