Stability AI CEO says most Indian developers will lose jobs within 2 years
As the AI boom continues, many see potential benefits, but others are equally concerned about its impact.

We've seen AI pioneers call for tougher regulations to prevent its potential harm to jobs and combat fake news. Until then, things will look completely different in no time. This also worries Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, who has repeatedly spoken about AI's impact on jobs.

During a call with UBS analysts, Emad shared the impact of AI in India and the risks faced by Indian programmers.
Mostaque adds that many outsourced Indian programmers will lose their jobs as companies start working with fewer coders and generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and StabilityAI. He notes, "If you're working in front of a computer and nobody's looking at you, it's very impactful because these models are really talented grads." He also said that outsourced Indian programmers will start feeling the heat of AI in a year or two.

"Outsourcing coders, level three programmers will leave in the next year or two, but in France you'll never fire a developer," he said, referring to countries' laws and regulations regarding AI.

Mostaque states jobs will be affected "in different ways in different sectors in different countries."
India is a prime location for many multinational companies for cheap labor and programmers. TCS (Tata Consulting Services) is the largest outsourcing provider in the country. Others include Infosys and Wipro.

All of the companies mentioned above are also experimenting with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, or at least building their own generative AI models.
Meanwhile, Mostaque's most popular remarks (or rather cautions) came in an interview with author Peter H. Diamonds earlier this month. The CEO of Stability AI talks about the current state of AI and says that programmers will be gone in five years.

He points to ChatGPT and Google Bard's code generation and review capabilities. Microsoft is also building productive AI tools on private servers, allowing companies to harness the power of technology without worrying about their data.
Mostaque believes that the next stage of AI will be working without the Internet. He claims that ChatGPT will be available on phones and will not require an internet connection by 2024. Notably, the ChatGPT iPhone app was recently launched. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has also said that work on an Android version has already begun. It may launch later this year.
