* Portuguese is one of the world’s most widely spoken languages. It is the most extensively spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere and has more than 265 million native speakers worldwide.

* This makes Portuguese the sixth most frequently spoken language in the planet. Let’s examine the history, culture, and impact of the Portuguese language on the remainder of the globe.

World Portuguese Language Day History :

* The intergovernmental organisation Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) designated May 5 as World Portuguese Language Day. Since 2000, C.P.L.P. has maintained an official partnership with UNESCO. However, it was not until the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2019 that the 5th of May was declared World Portuguese Language Day.

* Galician is the source of the Portuguese language’s origins. This was the native tongue of the people who resided in the northern regions of Portugal and northwest Spain. Galician was a combination of regional dialects and standard Latin. The language evolved over time, and around the 14th century, Portuguese emerged as its descendant. People who speak Portuguese are referred to as Lusophones. The preponderance of Lusophones currently reside in Brazil.

* Regional variations in the use of words and their meanings are one of the most intriguing aspects of the Portuguese language. Until 2009, the Portuguese alphabet consisted of only 23 letters, as the letters “K,” “W,” and “Y” did not exist in the language. The Portuguese-speaking countries signed a new “Orthographic Agreement” and adopted these letters in 2009. Numerous English words derive from the Portuguese language. Some examples of these words are’mosquito,’ ‘cobra,’ ‘fetish,”monsoon,”mango,”macaw,’ ‘coconut,’ and ‘breeze.’..
