The 13th edition of bilateral exercise between the Indian and the Royal Oman navies, Naseem Al Bahr-2022, commenced off the coast of Oman on 20 November 2022. 
 
* The exercise is being conducted in two phases : the Harbour Phase and the Sea Phase. The Indian Navy’s guided missile frigate Trikand and Offshore Patrol Vessel Sumitra, with their integral helicopters, and the maritime patrol aircraft, Dornier, are participating in the exercise.
 
* The exercise facilitates operational-level interaction between the two navies to foster mutual cooperation and enhance good order at sea. 
 
* The exercise also aims to strengthen the ancient maritime and cultural linkages between India and Oman. Friendly sports fixtures were conducted amongst participants from the two navies on the sidelines of the conference. 
 
* The exercise aims to intensify maritime exchanges between the two countries and enhance maritime security in the region.
 
* India has ancient maritime tradition and maritime interaction with Oman dates back to over 4000 years BC. Bilateral relations between both countries were formally established with signing of 1953 Indo-Oman Treaty of friendship, Navigation and Commerce. It was first between India and Arab country.

* Since then, bilateral naval exercises have contributed to strengthening of bilateral ties between both countries. The first exercise Indian Navy with Royal Navy of Oman was conducted in 1993.

* Further signing of MoU on Defence Cooperation in December 2005 and subsequent establishment of Joint Military Cooperation (JMC) in March 2006 had set foundation for increased defence cooperation. The naval cooperation between both countries since then has gradually increased in scope and scale.

The third edition of the ‘Pan-India’ Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-22’ will be conducted from 15 to 16 November 2022.

This National Level Coastal Defence Exercise was conceptualized in 2018 to validate various measures that have been instituted towards enhancing maritime security since ‘26/11’.
 
Coastal Security being a major sub-set of Coastal Defence construct, the concept of ‘Sea Vigil’ is to activate the Coastal Security apparatus across India and assess the overarching Coastal Defence mechanism.
 
Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil-22 Commenced : 
 
* The exercise will be undertaken along the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and will involve all the Coastal States and Union territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities.
 
* The exercise is being conducted by the Indian Navy in coordination with the Coast Guard and other ministries entrusted with the task of maritime activities.
 
* The scale and conceptual expanse of the exercise are unprecedented in terms of the geographical extent, the number of stakeholders involved, the number of units participating, and in terms of the objectives to be met.

India’s "Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)" has launched a new testing and evaluation facility for sonar systems of the Indian Navy.
 
* Announced by the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD), the new facility is now operational at DRDO’s Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) in Kochi, Kerala, India.
 
* This newly launched facility is named as Hull Module of Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterisation and Evaluation (SPACE).
 
* The design of this facility is based on the concept, design and requirements proposed by the NPOL.
 
* The SPACE facility will primarily test and assess sonar systems aboard different types of naval vessels, such as submarines, warships and maritime aircraft or helicopters.
 
* The centre will also allow rapid deployment and easy recovery of other scientific packages, including transducers and sensors.
 
* The new ‘one-of-a-kind’ facility is a submersible platform that can reach up to the depths of around 100m.
 
* In a statement, Indian MoD said : “The uniqueness of this facility lies in the specially designed submersible platform, which can be lowered up to depths of 100m using a series of synchronously operated winches.”
 
* The SPACE facility has been constructed by the Indian company "Larsen & Toubro (L&T)" Shipbuilding in Chennai.
 
* According to the MoD, the design and construction of the SPACE facility complies to all the statutory needs and requirements of the Indian Register of Shipping.
 
* Furthermore, the platform also adheres to the needs of the vessel classifying authority as well as the inspection and registration criteria set by the Kerala Inland Vessel Rules.
 
* This new facility has further boosted the Government of India’s ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
