Correct Answer :   North Korea

North Korea's leader "Kim Jong" Un personally oversaw the successful test of a hypersonic missile, state media reported Wednesday (12th Jan 2022), the second such launch by the nuclear-armed nation in less than a week.

The missile carrying a "hypersonic gliding vehicle" hit "the set target in waters 1,000 km off," the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

Photographs posted on the website of Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party, showed Kim Jong Un wearing a long black leather coat and using binoculars to watch the missile blast off from his mobile viewing platform.

"The superior maneuverability of the hypersonic glide vehicle was more strikingly verified through the final test-fire," the KCNA report said.

Other images in Rodong Sinmun showed the missile blasting off from land at dawn in a blaze of fire and smoke, and Kim discussing charts with uniformed officials.

BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

Correct Answer :   BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

The naval variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, with an extended range of 350 to 400-km, and the indigenous Man-Portable anti-tank guided missile (MP-ATGM), with a 2.5-km strike range, were successfully tested on Tuesday(11th Jan 2022).

The BrahMos missile was fired from the Navy’s latest guided-missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam, commissioned last November, to hit the designated target in a sea-to-sea mode with “precision”, a DRDO official said.

The low-weight, fire-and-forget MP-ATGM, in turn, was successfully flight-tested in its “final deliverable configuration”. The DRDO official said, “Launched from a man portable launcher integrated with thermal sight, the missile impacted the designated target and destroyed it.”

Correct Answer :   Russia

Russia test-fired around 10 new Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missiles from a frigate and two more from a submarine, Interfax news agency said on Friday citing northern fleet.

Russian President "Vladimir Putin" has lauded the weapon as part of a new generation of unrivalled arms systems.

Putin has called a missile test, conducted last week, "a big event in the country's life", adding that this was "a substantial step" in increasing Russia's defence capabilities.

Some Western experts have questioned how advanced Russia's new generation of weapons is, while recognising that the combination of speed, manoeuvrability and altitude of hypersonic missiles makes them difficult to track and intercept.

Putin announced an array of new hypersonic weapons in 2018 in one of his most bellicose speeches in years, saying they could hit almost any point in the world and evade a U.S.-built missile shield.

Two boosters provided initial acceleration during launch and a small turbojet engine was used to sustain high subsonic speed with long endurance.

The indigenous data link designed by Bengaluru based Industry partner has been successfully flown and tested during the flight. The performance of the system during the entire flight duration has been confirmed from the data captured by various Range instruments deployed.
