Correct Answer :   Hyderabad

The famous Haleem of Hyderabad has been selected as the ‘Most Popular GI’ award beating 17 food items across India including Rasgulla, Bikaneri Bhujiya, and Ratlami Sev.

The signature food of Hyderabad was chosen through a voting system conducted by the department for the promotion of industry and internal trade under the Union Ministry of Commerce.

The voting was conducted between August 2 and October 9 and people across India and abroad marked their preferences and the majority of the people chose Hyderabadi haleem to become the title. The response, overall, has been overwhelming, GI attorney, S Ravi said.

Haleem is an originally Arabic stew-like dish composed of meat, lentils, and pounded wheat made into a thick paste. It is the most popular dish in the city, especially during the month of Ramadan.

It provides instant energy and is high in calories. The dish was accorded the Geographic Indication (GI) tag in 2010 and was renewed in 2019

Haleem was the first non-vegetarian dish in India to receive this status. GI tag gives Hyderabad authority over the dish and no other place can make or sell it as Hyderabadi Haleem.

The dish was introduced to Hyderabad by the Arabs during the rule of the sixth Nizam, Mahbub Ali Khan. It became popular during the rule of the seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The addition of local flavours to the original recipe resulted in a taste distinct from other types of haleem.

President of Hyderabad Haleem Makers Association M A Majeed received the award from the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi recently..
