Manisha Kalyan became the first Indian footballer to feature in a UEFA Women's Champions League match as she made her debut for top-tier Cypriot club Apollon Ladies FC on Thursday(18th Aug 2022).

Manisha Kalyan took the field in the 60th minute at the Makareio Stadium in Engomi, Cyprus, for Apollon Ladies FC against Latvia’s SFK Riga in the UEFA Women's Champions League 2022-23 qualifying round. The 20-year-old Manisha came on as a substitute for Cyprus international Marilena Georgiou.

Though Manisha Kalyan did not get on the scoresheet, Apollon Ladies FC went on to win the all-important game 3-0. They will play Swiss club FC Zurich in the next round.

Manisha Kalyan, who was named the AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2021-22, is fast becoming one of India’s top women’s football players.

The Punjab-born striker made her international debut at the age of 17 against Hong Kong in January 2019. The young striker shot to fame after scoring a goal against Brazil in November 2021. The youngster signed a multi-year contract with Apollon Ladies FC in July this year, making her one of the few Indian women footballers alongside the likes of Bala Devi, Aditi Chauhan and Ashalata Devi to be recruited by a foreign club..

Scotland Museums in the Scottish city of Glasgow on Friday(19th Aug 2022) signed an agreement with the Indian government to repatriate seven stolen artefacts to India.

Glasgow Life, a charitable organisation which runs the city's museums, had confirmed the handover earlier this year and the arrangement was formalised at a transfer of ownership ceremony at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the presence of Acting Indian High Commissioner to the UK Sujit Ghosh.

The seven antiquities to now find their way back to India include a ceremonial Indo-Persian talwar or sword, believed to date back to the 14th century, and an 11th century carved stone door jamb taken from a temple in Kanpur.

We are delighted that our partnership with Glasgow Life has resulted in a decision to restitute Indian artefacts from Glasgow museums to India, said Ghosh..

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has showcased two space equipment built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), to be used in the first unmanned development launch of India’s manned space mission, Gaganyaan. Announced by the Indian central space agency earlier today, this is the second crew module fairing (CMF) that ISRO has taken delivery of for Gaganyaan.

The CMF is a protective structure that surrounds the actual housing for India’s to-be space scientists, built to withstand extreme conditions of heat, pressure and atmospheric friction. The structure will be tasked with keeping astronauts safe during the egress, ingress and landing procedures of the Gaganyaan mission.

Unnikrishnan Nair, director of ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), took delivery of the CMF structure, as well as a high-altitude escape motor Thrust-transfer Structure (HTS). The latter will be tasked with firing an escape motor to keep humans aboard the mission safe, and work towards transferring the requisite engine power to a crew escape module — in case of failure of any equipment aboard ISRO’s mission.

HAL and ISRO Highlights :
* According to sources, ISRO received the CMF structure, which included the thrust-transfer structure for the high-altitude escape motor (HTS).

* It should be emphasised that the HTS will be crucial in triggering an escape motor. Throughout the mission, this technology will keep the astronauts secure. In the event that a mission fails, the motor will aid in transferring engine power to the crew escape module.

* A CMF structure from Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technology Limited was delivered to ISRO in June.

* The CMF that ISRO received from HAL will be used during the first experiment, even though both of these CMFs will be employed in some capacity.

About Gaganyaan Mission :
* Gaganyaan mission, which translates to “Sky Craft” in Sanskrit, is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft that is meant to serve as the foundational spacecraft for the Indian Human Spaceflight Program.

* Gaganyaan mission, India’s long-delayed first human spaceflight project, will lift off in 2023.

* The Gaganyaan mission will send humans to space.

* The Gaganyaan mission would undergo a variety of testing and development flights, according to ISRO chairman S Somanath, who spoke recently following the launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLVC-53 )’s mission.

According to unconfirmed government reports, India is planning to lease six Tu-160 long-range bombers (also known as strategic bombers) from Russia, which are among the most formidable military aircraft ever created.

The Tu-160, known as the ‘White Swan’ in the Russian Air Force and dubbed ‘Blackjack’ by NATO, is a four-engined bomber capable of an operational range of 12,000 kilometres and carrying an operational load of up to 40 tonnes, conventional or nuclear.

India’s arsenal is devoid of strategic bombers. In comparison, the Chinese Air Force flies the Xian HS-6K, while the H-20 stealth bomber is ready for takeoff. The H-20 can transport conventional, nuclear-tipped, or hypersonic cruise missiles..
