The RBI kept the repo rate — the rate at which the RBI lends to banks — unchanged for the tenth time in a row at 4%. All six members of the MPC, headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, voted to keep the repo rate intact while one member, Jayanth Varma, dissented against retaining the accommodative policy stance. The RBI decision indicates that lending and deposit rates are expected to remain unchanged in the banking system.

What surprised most economists and market participants was the central bank retaining the reverse repo rate at 3.35%. The reverse repo rate is the rate at which RBI borrows from banks. A hike in this rate would have meant that the central bank wanted to absorb more money, or liquidity, from the banking system and would have signalled the start of the reversal of the monetary policy cycle that would eventually lead to a rise in rates.

Behind the RBI decision not to hike rates is also its outlook on inflation for the next financial year. Despite crude oil prices rising over $90 per barrel, it has projected a lower retail inflation level of 4.5% in the next fiscal 2022-23 as against the inflation forecast of 5.3% for 2021-22.

The RBI has projected real (adjusted for inflation) gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection at 7.8% for 2022-23. The real GDP growth at 9.2% for 2021-22 takes it modestly above the level of GDP in 2019-20, the policy panel said. But the projection is marginally below the lower limit of the band of 8% - 8.5% in the Economic Survey of 2021-22 and well below the IMF’s forecast of 9%.

Amid speculations of Russia's intention to invade Ukraine, Moscow on Thursday(10th Jan 2022) started major military drills with close ally Belarus, reported NBC News. The latest action from Russia came despite the Western countries pushing to sort out the issue diplomatically. As per the media reports, at least tens of thousands of troops, weapons systems and other forces are conducting joint exercises near the Ukrainian border. Apart from assembling near the Ukrainian border, Russian warships arrived in the Black Sea for naval drills, a move that Kyiv labelled part of a "hybrid war." Though Moscow claimed the assembling of troops only meant for military and naval drills, the western countries raised concerns Moscow could use them to execute their plan. Irrespective of western claims, Russia asserted the military and naval drills would not continue after February 20th.

However, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) claimed the military drills would involve up to 30,000 combat corps and labelled it the biggest Russian deployment there since the Cold War. It is worth mentioning that the action from Russia came nearly four days after the mediation meeting held between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin. After the meeting, Macron claimed the meeting would help avoid further escalation. On the other hand, the White House said the recent development from the Russian side raised doubt and added "the drills don’t instil confidence that a de-escalation is possible". While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, "We see this as certainly more of an escalator and not a de-escalator action."

Amid the growing concern over junk in outer space, the Indian Space & Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully disposed of one of its satellites after it completed its operational life in orbit. The INSAT-4B underwent Post Mission Disposal (PMD) at the end of its service, followed by decommissioning on January 24, 2022, Isro said.

"INSAT-4B is the 21st Indian Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite to undergo post-mission disposal, the required propellant for such re-orbiting was included in the initial fuel budget as a part of standard practice followed in ISRO's GEO mission planning," Isro said in a statement.

The development is in compliance with the UN and the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) recommended space debris mitigation guidelines. The IADC guidelines provide guidance for limiting the generation of orbital debris both during and after space operations. The guidelines also define accepted disposal orbits and other conditions, such as the timeline for abandoning commonly used orbits and controlling the risk to people and property on the Earth.

Isro added that the successful post-mission disposal of INSAT-4B through meticulous planning and flawless execution marks yet another endeavour by the space agency to ensure the safety and sustainability of outer space operations.
