The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has signed its renewed Statement of Commitment (SoC) to the FX Global Code (“Code”). The Code, which was initially launched on May 25, 2017, was subsequently reviewed holistically and the updated Code was published by Global FX Committee on July 15, 2021. The Code is a compilation of best market practices, formulated by Central Banks and market participants, developed under the auspices of Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Basel.

The Code is applicable to the Wholesale FX market participants covering sell-side, buy-side and financial intermediaries, and is voluntary in nature. The Code does not impose any legal or regulatory obligation and is intended to be a supplement to the local laws, rules and regulations. The Code is currently being implemented globally by the Global FX Committee (GFXC) in co-ordination with the Local FX Committee (LFXC) in each jurisdiction. RBI is a member of GFXC

RBI, along with four major Central Banks, had welcomed the publication of the Code through joint media release dated May 25, 2017 (Joint Media Release: BOK, HKMA, MAS, RBA and RBI welcome the publication of the FX Global Code). Later, RBI had issued its Statement of Commitment on April 18, 2019.

RBI continues to support the principles of good practices within the Code. RBI had also facilitated the formation of India Foreign Exchange Committee (IFXC) to promote adoption and adherence of the Code among FX market participants in India. The Code and other related information is available at: https://www.globalfxc.org

The Indian economy is expected to expand 7% in fiscal 2022/23, slower than a previous estimate of 7.4% and the central bank's 7.2% projection, according to a survey by India's leading industry body.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) quarterly survey, released on Thursday(21st July 2022), said the war in Ukraine is likely to keep inflation high and dent consumer demand.

"CPI is anticipated to remain above the RBI's tolerance band till the third quarter of FY2022-23 and may come within the tolerance level only after the fourth quarter," the FICCI said in a press statement.

Annual consumer inflation has remained above the RBI's 2%-6% tolerance band for six straight months to June, prompting economists in the survey to predict the RBI will hike the repo rate further to 5.65% by the end of the fiscal year in March 2023..

The Reserve Bank of India has hiked the minimum capital adequacy ratio (CAR) for Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) with deposits above Rs 100 crore to "12 per cent" from the earlier floor of 9.0 per cent.

It has provided a glide path till March 2026 to meet revised CAR norm in phases for UCBs that don't meet it currently.

It has retained the norm of a minimum CAR of 9 per cent for tier-1 banks (those with deposits up to Rs 100 crore).

This is based on recommendations of a panel headed by N S Vishwanathan, former Deputy Governor set up in February 2021.

According to the data reported by the banks as on March 31, 2021, most UCBs have a CRAR of more than 12 per cent (1,274 lenders out of 1,534).

The Tier-2 banks are UCBs with deposits of more than Rs 100 crore and up to Rs 1,000 crore; Tier-3 are UCBs with deposits of more than Rs 1,000 crore and up to Rs 10,000 crore. The final layer, Tier-4. consists of banks with deposits exceeding Rs 10,000 crore..

China will host the Asian Games from September 23 to October 8, 2023, organisers said on Tuesday (19th July 2022), after postponing the event in Hangzhou because of Covid-19.

The new dates were announced by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The event was originally scheduled to be held in September this year, but organisers in May postponed it as China tried to stamp out a large Covid-19 resurgence in several parts of the country.

Hangzhou lies less than 200 kilometres from the country's biggest city Shanghai, which endured a months-long lockdown earlier this year as part of the ruling Communist Party's zero-tolerance approach to the virus.

The OCA said on Tuesday that the new dates were chosen to avoid "conflict with other major international sporting events".

The Asian Games typically attract over 10,000 athletes from across the region, with Singapore to field its largest-ever contingent of 382 athletes at the quadrennial event.

China is the last major economy committed to stamping out domestic spread of the virus through harsh lockdowns, mass testing and strict controls on international travel.

But that has hurt the country's international sporting ambitions, with the world's most populous nation cancelling or postponing almost all events since the start of the pandemic, with the exception of this year's Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The World University Games, scheduled to begin in June in Chengdu and already delayed from last year, have also been postponed again, until 2023..
