The American space agency, NASA is planning to send a high-tech spacecraft called Psyche to an asteroid of the same name, 16 Psyche. It will be a first-of-its-kind mission to study a metal-rich asteroid, which aims to help scientists learn more about the formation of rocky bodies in our solar system.

The launch of the mission will take place on Thursday (12 Oct 2023) when NASA’s Psyche spacecraft will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and travel 2.2 billion miles.

Here is everything to know about NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission:

Aim of NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission :

As per the data obtained from Earth-based radar and optical telescopes, scientists concluded that the asteroid Psyche could be part of the metal-rich interior of a planetesimal, a building block of a rocky planet that never formed. The rock might have collided with other large bodies during its early formation and lost its outer rocky shell.

So exploring Psyche could provide information into the history of violent collisions and accumulation of matter that created planets.

Psyche mission is a team effort of NASA and Arizona State University :

The Psyche asteroid mission is a collaboration of NASA and Arizona State University (ASU). The principal investigator of the mission, Lindy Elkins Tanton, is based at ASU.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California is managing the mission for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, JPL is also responsible for system engineering, integration and test, and mission operations.

NASA’s Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center is managing launch operations and has procured the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

How Psyche’s study will be different from other objects in the solar system?

Other solar system bodies like Mars, Venus, and Earth are comprised of iron oxides but Psyche’s surface doesn’t seem to feature much of these chemical compounds. This suggests that the asteroid’s history differs from standard stories of planetary formation.

If the asteroid proves to be leftover core material from a planetary building block, scientists will learn how its history resembles and diverges from that of the rocky planets. And if scientists discover that Psyche is not an exposed core, it may prove to be a never-before-seen kind of primordial solar system object..

Spain's company PLD Space launched Miura-1 rocket on Saturday (Oct 7, 2023) marking Europe's first fully private rocket launch. Miura-1, a recoverable rocket was launched from a site in southwest Spain. The launch is being viewed as a boost to Europe's stalled space ambitions.

PLD Space's test launch at night from Huelva came after two previous attempts were scrubbed. The Miura-1 rocket has been name after a breed of fighting bull. The rocket is as tall as a three-storey building. It has a 100-kg (220-pound) cargo capacity.

The company said that the launch does carry payload for test purposes but the payload will not be released. Engineers were seen cheering in a mission control video as the rocket lifted off in the night sky.

The launch of the Miura 1, the first rocket with 100% Spanish technology, has been a success. A milestone that positions Spain's research and development at the forefront of space transportation.

The flight of the rocket lasted for 306 seconds. The maximum height of 46 kilometres was however, just half the altitude the mission planners had aimed for, said Space[dot]com.

The company will recover the partially reusable launcher on Saturday. The launcher landed in the Atlantic Ocean.

The first attempt to launch Miura-1 was carried out in the month of May, but was abandoned because of high-altitude winds. A second attempt was carried out in June but it was a failure when umbilical cables did not all release in time . The lift-off was halted amid smoke and flames spewing from the rocket..

In the final of 19th Asian Games 2023, on Saturday (7th Oct 2023) at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre, Indian archer Ojas Pravin Deotale from Nagpur won gold medal in the men’s individual compound archery event.

This victory marks Ojus Deotale third gold medal in the Asian Games 2023, solidifying his position as one of India’s most successful athlete in the tournament.

A Historic Hat-Trick : Ojus Deotale’s third gold medal in this edition of the Asian Games 2023, making him the joint most successful Indian sportsperson in this Asian Games. Prior to his victory, Deotale had earlier won gold medals in Compound Men’s Team and Compound Mixed Team competitions.

Precision and Consistency : Ojus Deotale’s success can be attributed to his exceptional precision and determination in the archery field. Deotale missed the 10-point circle only once in the centre of the target only once as he compiled a score of 140 out of a possible 150 in the final in which each archer shoots five rounds (called End in archery) with three arrows in each round.

Tense Moments in the Final : Deotale, the 21-year-old from Nagpur in Maharashtra who won the World Championship in Berlin earlier this year, shot his only score of nine in the final on in the second arrow of the fourth round. In contrast, Verma encountered a nine off the third arrow in the second round and then got an eight on the second arrow of the third, thus pushing him three points behind Deotale.

Deotale’s Decisive Victory : While Verma managed to narrow the gap by winning the fourth round 30-29, it was not enough to overtake Deotale. In the fifth and final round, Deotale shot a perfect of 30, sealing his voctory and solidifying his status as the most successul Indian athlete at the Asian Games 2023.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi the 2023 Nobel Prize for Peace, “For her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all” according to its citation.

In their announcement, the Committee also referred to last year’s protests in Iran against the killing of a young woman named Mahsa Amini while she was in the custody of Iran’s morality police. It said the protests’ motto, ‘Zan – Zendegi – Azadi (Woman – Life – Freedom)’, “suitably expresses the dedication and work of Narges Mohammadi.”

Who is Narges Mohammadi?

Born in 1972 in Iran, Mohammadi is currently living in a detention facility there under the charges of “spreading anti-state propaganda” and defamation. Mohammadi and her family have long been involved in political protests – beginning with the Iranian Revolution. The monarchy fell at the end of the movement in 1979, leading to Iran becoming an Islamic republic.

Mohammadi told The New York Times in an interview this year that two childhood memories “set her on the path to activism”, her mother’s prison visits to her brother and seeing her watch announcements on TV for the names of prisoners executed each day.

She went on to study nuclear physics in the city of Qazvin. Here, she also met her future husband Taghi Rahmani, who is also politically active. He was jailed for 14 years in Iran and currently lives in exile in France with the couple’s two children.

Her family said in a statement that it wished to “express their profound gratitude to the Nobel Peace Committee for bestowing upon her this highly esteemed honor.” “We also want to extend our sincere congratulations to all Iranians, especially the courageous women and girls of Iran who have captivated the world with their bravery in fighting for freedom and equality… As Narges always says: Victory is not easy, but it’s certain,” the statement said..

Outlook Group announces the launch of its highly anticipated retirement planning event, “40After40”, in association with IDFC FIRST Bank.

A one-of-its-kind platform, "40After40" is a two-day event and expo, which will be held at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on January 23-24, 2024.

It’s a one-stop shop for all conversations around timely retirement, panel discussions, chats, masterclasses, interactions with planners, product presentations etc.

The elderly population in India has been rising; it is projected to rise 41 per cent over a decade—from 138 million in 2021 to 194 million in 2031, according to a National Statistical Office (NSO) report, Elderly in India 2021.

Similarly, projections from statista.com for 2021-31 show that the growth rate of the elderly population is expected to be five times the growth rate of the total population. Further, life expectancy in India has also gone up from around 60 years in the late 1990s to around 70 years in 2023 and is only likely to go up further.

In this scenario, it is the need of the hour for individuals of all age groups, and especially those crossing the age of 40, to become conscious and start planning for their retirement years.

The Need For A Retirement Platform :

The event is only one part of the Outlook Money Retirement platform. The Outlook Group, along with IDFC FIRST Bank, aims to approach the key question of retirement through the various print and digital platforms within the group.

“With rising life expectancy and shrinking sizes of families and homes, it’s the need of the hour to have a conversation about and highlight the importance of retirement savings and planning. Outlook Money and IDFC FIRST Bank believe that anyone can save enough for retirement if an individual takes a planned approach with proper guidance. The earlier one starts, the better,” said Nidhi Sinha, editor, Outlook Money.

The retirement initiative is a part of Outlook Money’s commitment towards empowering individuals to achieve financial security and prosperity in their golden years. “Our retirement platform, of which 40After40 is a key part, wants to create awareness and generate debates that can make a material difference in the way people think about their own future and government institutions address their needs,” said Indranil Roy, CEO, Outlook Group.

We aim to reach at least 50 million page views of the retirement-related content that is being created on Outlook Money’s retirement platform to ensure the message goes far and wide..
