Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) became the largest and fastest-growing UPI beneficiary bank in India. It becomes the first beneficiary bank in the country to achieve the landmark of over 926 million UPI transactions in a single month. Beneficiary banks are the banks of the account holder who is receiving money. Paytm Payments Bank has also gained rapid traction as a remitter bank for UPI payments.
 
While State Bank of India (SBI) topped the chart of being the biggest remitter in December 2021, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). State Bank of India followed PPBL as the second-largest beneficiary with 664.89 million transactions.

As per the weekly Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, the foreign exchange reserves of India declined by $878 million to USD 632.736 billion in the week ended January 7, 2022. In the previous week ended December 31, India’s reserves dropped by $1.466 billion to $633.614 billion. 
 
The decline was mainly due to a fall in gold reserves and Foreign Currency Assets (FCA). In the reporting week, FCAs decreased by $497 million to $569.392 billion.
 
Gold reserves declined by $360 million to $39.044 billion. The special drawing rights (SDRs) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) fell by $16 million to $19.098 billion. India’s reserve position with the IMF dipped by $5 million to $5.202 billion.

Cyprus has detected a new variant dubbed as “Deltacron”, that has a similar genetic background to the Delta variant, coupled with 10 mutations from Omicron. The variant has already affected 25 people in Cyprus. According to Dr Leondios Kostrikis, the head of the laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology at the University of Cyprus, of the 25 samples taken in Cyprus, 11 were hospitalised due to the virus, while 14 were from the general population.

India are scheduled to host Sri Lanka next for a two-Test series in February-March this year.

Achieving another milestone in its ongoing Gaganyaan programme, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday(12th Jan 2022) successfully conducted the qualification test of the cryogenic engine of the human-rated GSLV rocket to be used in the country’s maiden human spaceflight mission, scheduled to be launched in 2023.
 
“Isro successfully conducted the qualification test of cryogenic engine for Gaganyaan programme for a duration of 720 seconds at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. The performance of the engine met the test objectives and the engine parameters were closely matching with the predictions during the entire duration of the test, the space agency said in a statement.
 
The successful long-duration test is a major milestone as it ensured the reliability and robustness of the cryogenic engine for induction into the human-rated launch vehicle. Further, the engine will undergo four more tests for a cumulative duration of 1810 seconds. Subsequently, one more engine will undergo two short-duration tests and one long-duration test to complete the cryogenic engine qualification for the manned mission.

Trinidad and Tobago Olympic and world medalist Dion Landor has died in a car accident at the age of 29. The governing body of World Athletics and Sports gave information about this on Tuesday. According to reports, Landor died in a car accident in Texas, USA on Monday(10th Jan 2022).
 
News of his death first appeared on social media in the United States and the Caribbean and was later confirmed by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee.
 
A three-time Olympian, who led his country to a medal for the bronze relay at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He then went on to win bronze medals in two world indoor 400s and 4x400m.
 
Born on 28 October 1992 in Mount Hope, the sprinter began his career with local club Abilene Wildcats before moving to the United States.
 
He made his global debut at the 2009 World Under 18 Championships in Bresnon and competed in the 2010 World Under 20 Championships in Moncton. Subsequently, at the age of 19, he made his Olympic debut in London.

Flipkart Group on Thursday(13th Jan 2022) announced the acquisition of Yaantra, an electronics re-commerce company, for an undisclosed amount as part of efforts to strengthen its re-commerce business and enhance after-sale offerings for its customers in the smartphones segment. 
 
The acquisition has been effected through FK Group Entity, F1 Info Solutions and Services Pvt Ltd that is engaged in the business of offering comprehensive lifecycle management (repairs and refurbishment) for various categories including mobility, consumer electronics, IT and IT peripherals, AV and enterprise solutions, in the B2B (business-to-business) segment, according to a statement.
 
Yaantra, incorporated in 2013 by Jayant Jha, Ankit Saraf and Anmol Gupta, repairs and sells refurbished consumer tech products such as smartphones and laptops. With this acquisition, Flipkart will provide a comprehensive service ecosystem to its customers that takes care of the entire lifecycle of smartphones, the statement said. Flipkart will enable greater access to affordable refurbished smartphones, offering value and convenience for the end-consumers, it added.
