India’s Mars Orbiter craft has run out of propellant and its battery is drained beyond the safe limit, fuelling speculation that the country’s maiden interplanetary mission Mangalyaan may have finally completed its long innings.

The ₹450 crore Mars Orbiter Mission was launched onboard PSLV-C25 on November 5, 2013, and the MOM spacecraft was successfully inserted into the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 in its first attempt. “Right now, there is no fuel left.

The satellite battery has drained,” a source in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said. “The link has been lost.” There was, however, no official word from the country’s national space agency.

ISRO officials noted that the Mars orbiter craft functioned for almost eight years(8 Years), well beyond its designed mission life of six months.

The MOM — a technology demonstration venture — carried five scientific payloads (total 15 kg) collecting data on surface geology, morphology, atmospheric processes, surface temperature and atmospheric escape process.

The five instruments are: Mars Color Camera (MCC), Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) and Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP).

“MOM is credited with many laurels like cost-effectiveness, short period of realisation, economical mass-budget, and miniaturisation of five heterogeneous science payloads", ISRO officials pointed out.

Highly elliptical orbit geometry of MOM enabled MCC to take snap shots of ‘Full disc’ of Mars at its farthest point and finer details from closest point.

The MCC has produced more than 1000 images and published a Mars Atlas..

Correct Answer :   Shivpal Singh

Top Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh has been handed a four-year suspension for failing a dope test last year by the NADA's Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel.

Shivpal, who took part in the Tokyo Olympics, was placed under provisional suspension in October last year after he failed an out-of-competition test. He had tested positive for banned substance Metandieonone.

The ban period for the 27-year-old Uttar Pradesh athlete began from October 21 last year and his ineligibility period will be up to October 2025.

In fact, the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel gave the decision in August and surprisingly there was no detailed order uploaded on the website of the National Anti-Doping Agency.

Shivpal's test was conducted after the Tokyo Olympics when there was no national camp in operation. His name was there in the list of athletes announced by the Sports Authority of India for the camp from October 15 to December 31 last year. But he was dropped when the camp was extended till March 31 this year..

Swedish paleogeneticist "Svante Paabo" was awarded the Nobel Prize 2022 in physiology or medicine on Monday(3rd Oct 2022) “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution," kicking off a week of winner announcements held under the shadow of the bloody war in Ukraine.

Paabo, founder of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, and who also serves as an adjunct professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, accomplished "something seemingly impossible" through his pioneering research, the Nobel committee said: sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans.

Nobel Prizes 2022: About his  research : Through his pioneering research, Svante Pääbo accomplished something seemingly impossible: sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans. He also made the sensational discovery of a previously unknown hominin, Denisova. Importantly, Pääbo also found that gene transfer had occurred from these now extinct hominins to Homo sapiens following the migration out of Africa around 70,000 years ago. This ancient flow of genes to present-day humans has physiological relevance today, for example affecting how our immune system reacts to infections.

In 1990, Pääbo was recruited to the University of Munich, where, as a newly appointed Professor, he continued his work on archaic DNA. He decided to analyze DNA from Neanderthal mitochondria – organelles in cells that contain their own DNA. The mitochondrial genome is small and contains only a fraction of the genetic information in the cell, but it is present in thousands of copies, increasing the chance of success.

About the Svante Paabo : Svante Pääbo (born 20 April 1955) is a Swedish geneticist specialising in the field of evolutionary genetics and a Nobel prize laureate. As one of the founders of paleogenetics, he has worked extensively on the Neanderthal genome. He was appointed director of the Department of Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany in 1997. He is also a professor at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan.

The Nobel Prize : The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). The prize money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895. The other prizes are for outstanding work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics..

Optimus was revealed at Tesla AI Day 2022, an event which aimed to demonstrate how far the company's autonomous robot and vehicle research has come.

According to media reports, the event gave the first look of Optimus, strolling around the stage, updates on new self-driving software and also a first look at the Dojo hardware powering Tesla's AI research.

According to Elon Musk, this humanoid prototype can do more than what was shown live. However, it first operated without a tether during the Tesla AI Day event. Musk also claimed that the difference between Tesla's humanoid and other very impressive humanoid robot demonstrations is that Tesla's Optimus is made for mass production in the "millions" of units and to be very capable.

About Optimus robot's prototype :

* After much waiting, the Optimus was finally presented in functional form. It has a 2.3kWh battery, weighs 73 kg, it walks about and waves using external actuators.

* The autopilot team at Tesla described how far they have gone with fully autonomous driving, which has increased from 2,000 Tesla drivers to 160,000 this year in its beta testing.

* Elon Musk suggested a potential worldwide expansion, despite the fact that it is presently only accessible in the US and Canada..

China’s Zhurong rover has peered under the surface of Mars and has found evidence of two huge floods that shaped the landscape.

Since May 2021, Zhurong has been exploring Utopia Planitia, in Mars’s northern hemisphere.

Images from the rover’s ground-penetrating radar found layered patterns under the surface, which are made of sedimentary rocks carried in by two major floods around 1.6 billion years ago.

China's Zhurong rover landed in the Utopia Planitia, a 2,000-miles-wide (3,300 kilometers) basin in the Northern Hemisphere of Mars, in May 2021.

Since then, the rover has been studying local geology, chemical composition of rocks, and local weather conditions using its six scientific instruments.

Zhurong has already completed its primary mission of 90 sols. But the rover is continuing its way to the south of its landing site, collecting data as it goes.

The outstanding credit card base dropped to 77.99 million in August 2022 from over 80 million in July 2022, mainly on account of the new norms of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that warrant the deactivation of cards that are inactive for a year.

While there was a 2.8 per cent decline in net card additions on a month-on-month (MoM) basis in August, a first in many months, credit card spends slipped 3 per cent on a high base. Still, spends topped the Rs 1-trillion mark for the sixth consecutive month.

The banking system had been adding about 1-1.5 million cards a month for some time now. But in August, “credit cards outstanding for the industry declined by 2.3 million, largely as a result of sharp declines seen for HDFC Bank and Axis Bank.

This is largely on account of the implementation of the new RBI norms requiring credit card companies to deactivate cards that are inactive for 365 days. This should impact other players, as well with a lag”, stated Suresh Ganapathy and Param Subramanian in a report for Macquarie Research.

Major issuers, such as HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, have seen a significant drop in their net credit card additions in August 2022.

The number of HDFC Bank’s outstanding credit cards dropped by 8.47 per cent in a month to 16.42 million, from 17.94 million in July.

Axis Bank witnessed a 10.6 per cent drop in its outstanding credit card base to 8.87 million, from 9.93 million in July 2022. HDFC Bank is the largest credit card issuer in the country and Axis Bank is the fourth-biggest..
