Ace Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was named the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for 2021 in New Delhi.
 
Mirabai Chanu, who is preparing for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games currently, bagged the Silver medal in the 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics.
 
Mirabai saw off competition from four other nominees in ace shuttler player PV Sindhu, golfer Aditi Ashok, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, and Para-shooter Avani Lekhara for the award.
 
In her reaction via a video message after winning the award, Mirabai said, "I am currently training in the United States. I will give my best to win gold at this year's Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Thank you to BBC India for honouring me with the BBC Indian Sportswoman Of The Year award."
 
Among the other awards, Indian women's cricketer Shafali Verma was awarded the BBC Emerging Player award.

Belgian footballer "Miguel Van Damme" has died at (29th March 2022) the age of 28 following a long-running battle with leukemia.
 
Van Damme was diagnosed with leukemia in 2016 and underwent several courses of treatment for cancer over five years.
 
He successfully saw off infection on two occasions, but announced in September 2020 that it had returned for the third time and that this time it was incurable.
 
“It is with the greatest sadness that we report that our friend and teammate Miguel Van Damme lost the fight in his long and uneven battle against leukemia,” Cercle Brugge said in a statement.
 
“Words are not enough to describe what we feel, even though we knew that things had not gone well for a while. Today is an extremely difficult day in the almost 123-year history of Cercle Brugge,” it added, sending condolences to the goalkeeper’s wife Kyana, daughter Camille, as well as his parents, sister, friends and family.”
 
“Miguel, your perseverance and strength to go for it again and again, setback after setback, was admirable. You are an example of positivism, persistence and fighting spirit. A source of inspiration for everyone who fights. Forever in our green-black heart, #16,” the club added.
 
Van Damme made 40 appearances for Cercle Brugge.
 
Spanish giants Real Madrid said in a statement: “Real Madrid C. F., the club’s President and the Board of Directors are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Circulo de Brujas player Miguel Van Damme. Real Madrid would like to send its condolences and its warmest regards and affection to all his family and loved ones, to his club and to his teammates.”

The first edition of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Maritime Exercise 2022 (IMEX-22) was held from March 26 to 30, 2022, in Goa and in the Arabian Sea. The objective of the exercise was to enhance the interoperability of the navies of member nations in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. The exercise is seen as a significant stepping stone for regional navies to collaborate and respond collectively to natural disasters in the region and paves way for further strengthening regional cooperation.
 
About the exercise : The navies from 15 out of the 25 member nations of IONS, participated in the exercise. The Harbour Phase of IMEX – 22 was held at Marmugao port, Goa on March 26 and 27 while the Sea Phase took place in the Arabian Sea from March 28 to 30, 2022.
 
What is IONS?
 
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) is a series of biennial meetings between the littoral states of the Indian Ocean region, to increase maritime security cooperation, discuss regional maritime issues, and promote friendly relationships among the member states. The forum was established in 2007.
