India’s first commercial space situational awareness observatory, to track objects as small as 10 cm in size orbiting the earth, will be set up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand by Digantara, a space sector start-up.

The space situational awareness (SSA) observatory will help India track any activity in space including that of space debris and military satellites hovering over the region.

Currently, the United States is a dominant player in monitoring space debris with observatories in multiple locations and commercial companies providing additional inputs from across the world.

“The observatory in Uttarakhand will fill the crucial gap in SSA observations in the region as there is a lack of such facilities between Australia and southern Africa,” Anirudh Sharma, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Digantara.

The high-quality observations, along with those of its partner ground-based sensor network, would help improve its ability to monitor events occurring in deep space, especially in the geostationary, medium-Earth, and high-Earth orbits..

The Railways conducted a test run of the 3.5-km-long freight train, "Super Vasuki", with 295 loaded wagons carrying over 27,000 tonnes of coal between Korba in Chhattisgarh and Rajnandgao in Nagpur on August 15, as part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' celebrations.

The train run by the South East Central Railway(SECR) left Korba at 13:50 and took 11.20 hours to cover the distance of 267 km.

This is the longest and heaviest freight train ever run by the Railways, the national transporter said, adding the train takes about four minutes to cross a station.

The amount of coal carried by Super Vasuki is enough to fire 3000 MW of power plant for one full day, officials said. This is three times the capacity of existing railway rakes (90 cars with 100 tonnes in each) which carries about 9,000 tonnes of coal in one journey.

The train was formed by amalgamating five rakes of goods trains as one unit.

The Railways plans to use this arrangement (longer freight trains) more frequently, especially to transport coal in peak demand season to prevent fuel shortages of power stations, the officials said.

Earlier this year, coal shortages had pushed the country into a severe power crisis..

The Indian Army is set to possess advanced quantum communication technology, thereby joining an elite list of nations with indigenous quantum tech. The new technology will equip troops with a high-end secured defence system.

The technology, developed by QNu Labs, a Bengaluru-based deep tech start-up, will help in modern-day war fare as the communication channel created using the Quantum Key Distribution (QDK) system is non-hackable, according to the defence ministry.

"A QKD system allows the creation of a quantum-secure secret pair of symmetric keys between two end points, separated by a certain distance [in this case, over 150 km in a terrestrial optical fibre infrastructure. The QKD helps create a non-hackable quantum channel for creating un-hackable encryption keys, which are used to encrypt critical data/voice/video, across the end points," the ministry said in a statement..

A first of its kind, Composite Indoor Shooting Range (CISR) was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command at INS Karna, on the premises of INS Kalinga near Bheemili, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday(18th Aug 2022).

The CISR is a state of the art, self-contained, 25 m, six lane, live firing range for all primary and secondary weapons in the Navy. With advanced target systems with associated control software, this range would enable personnel to hone their firing skills, enabling them to challenge and take on adversaries in demanding scenarios.

The range has been set up to contemporary international standards by an Indian firm and is a shining example of Atma Nirbhar Bharat in the year of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The entire facility was set up in a record time of 120 days from the award of contract to the firm.

INS Karna is the first in the Navy and perhaps the only military unit in the country to set up and use CISR presently. The facility would significantly enhance the operational capability of the Naval personnel of ENC enabling them to better undertake the wide gamut of tasks that they are mandated to perform over the entire area of responsibility by allowing uninterrupted training in controlled conditions for a wide variety of weapons and simulated situations..
