Every year on the first Tuesday of May, we celebrate World Asthma Day. This year World Asthma Day is observed on May 7, 2024 is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma, (GINA) with World Health Organization collaborative organization founded in 1993. This day is all about raising awareness about asthma, a long-term lung disease that affects millions of people around the world.

This year, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Asthma Education Empowers” to highlight the importance of teaching people with asthma and healthcare workers about the condition.

Asthma: A Global Health Problem :

Asthma is a chronic disease that affects over 260 million people worldwide. Sadly, it causes around 450,000 deaths every year. This shows how important it is to better understand and manage this condition.

The Power of Education :

The theme “Asthma Education Empowers” tells us that teaching people with asthma about their condition is very important. When they learn about asthma, they can manage their symptoms better, know when to see a doctor, and improve their overall life quality.

The theme also encourages healthcare workers to learn more about asthma, including how to treat it and the latest research. By staying up-to-date, they can give their patients the right information and the best care.

A Long-Standing Tradition :

The first World Asthma Day was celebrated in 1998, at the same time as the first World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Since then, it has become a major global event, with over 35 countries participating in the first year. More and more people are now aware of asthma and the need for education.

May was chosen for this event because asthma symptoms often get worse in spring and fall.

Empowering People and Communities :

Through the theme “Asthma Education Empowers,” GINA wants to give people with asthma and their communities the tools and knowledge to better manage this condition. By helping healthcare workers and the public understand asthma better, the World Asthma Day 2024 aims to reduce the number of people who get sick or die from this disease.

As we celebrate World Asthma Day, let’s work together to educate people about asthma so that those with this condition can live full and active lives, without being limited by their illness.

Correct Answer :   José Raúl Mulino

José Raúl Mulino has emerged victorious in Panama’s presidential election, securing nearly 35% of the counted votes with over 92% of the ballots tallied. The 64-year-old former security minister has gained an unassailable 9% lead over his nearest rival, prompting three of his closest opponents to concede defeat.

Mulino: From Vice-Presidential Candidate to President :

Initially, Mulino was chosen as the Vice-Presidential candidate by former President Ricardo Martinelli, who was the initial Presidential candidate. However, after Martinelli’s conviction for money laundering and subsequent 10-year prison sentence, he fled and sought political asylum in the Nicaraguan embassy in the capital. Mulino stepped in to replace Martinelli as the Presidential candidate, garnering support from the Achieving Goals and Alliance parties.

Economic Challenges Await :

The newly elected president will inherit an economy facing various challenges. Panama’s economic growth is projected to reach 2.5% in 2024, while grappling with high income inequality and an unemployment rate hovering around 10%. Additionally, a severe drought has impacted traffic in the economically crucial Panama Canal, and the country faces high public debt and declining foreign investment.

Illegal Migration and Diplomatic Tensions :

Panama also grapples with the issue of illegal migration, as a significant number of migrants attempt to cross through its jungles en route to the United States. This ongoing situation has caused diplomatic tensions between Panama and the U.S.

Panama’s Government Structure :

Panama has a popularly elected representative form of government, with the president serving as the head of the executive branch. The president is directly elected by the people for a five-year term and can serve only one term. The vice-president is also directly elected and subject to the same term limit.

The National Assembly, Panama’s parliament, comprises 71 members who are directly elected by the people for a five-year term. Assembly members are eligible for re-election.

About the Republic of Panama :

Panama is a Central American country situated on the isthmus of Panama, connecting the North and South American continents. It is renowned for the Panama Canal, a vital 82-kilometer (51-mile) man-made waterway linking the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, facilitating global maritime trade.

The Panama Canal was previously controlled by the United States but was transferred to Panamanian ownership on December 31, 1999.

India Ratings and Research have revised upward their GDP growth estimate for FY25 to 7.1%, citing strong government expenditure, improved corporate and banking sector balance sheets, and a budding private corporate capex cycle. However, they caution that growth could be constrained by factors such as uneven consumption demand and export challenges due to global economic sluggishness.

Consumption Demand Dynamics :

India Ratings highlights that current consumption demand is skewed towards upper-income brackets, with rural consumption remaining weak. They anticipate a surge in private final consumption expenditure to 7% in FY25, up from 3% in FY24, potentially marking a three-year high. The agency underscores the importance of sustained real wage growth for a more inclusive and sustainable consumption recovery.

Capex Outlook :

While private sector activity has been subdued for several years, India Ratings sees signs of a new investment cycle emerging, as evidenced by increased project loans sanctioned by lenders. This suggests a potential uptick in private sector capital expenditure in the near future.

Inflation and Monetary Policy :

India Ratings forecasts headline inflation to moderate in FY25 but emphasizes the need for continued vigilance from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Despite the expected moderation, monitoring inflationary pressures remains crucial for maintaining price stability and supporting economic growth.

Ukraine has unveiled an AI-generated spokesperson, named Victoria Shi, to deliver official statements from its foreign ministry. This significant technological leap in diplomatic communication has captured global attention.

Meet Victoria Shi: The Digital Diplomat :

During a social media presentation, Victoria Shi made her debut, appearing dressed in a dark suit and displaying human-like gestures and speech. Despite her AI-powered appearance, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has assured that the content of Shi’s statements will be crafted and verified by human staff, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

Enhancing Efficiency and Saving Resources :

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba highlighted that the introduction of a digital spokesperson is aimed at saving time and resources, allowing diplomats to focus on other crucial aspects of their work. By leveraging AI technology, Ukraine hopes to streamline its communication processes while maintaining transparency and authenticity.

A Unique Collaboration: AI and Human Expertise :

The spokesperson’s name, Victoria Shi, is a combination of the words “victory” and the Ukrainian phrase for artificial intelligence, “shtuchniy intelekt.” She was developed by the Game Changers team, renowned for their virtual-reality content related to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Notably, Shi’s appearance and voice are modeled after Rosalie Nombre, a singer and former contestant on Ukraine’s version of “The Bachelor,” hailing from the now Russian-controlled city of Donetsk.

Ensuring Authenticity and Preventing Misinformation :

To prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure the authenticity of Shi’s statements, the foreign ministry will accompany each presentation with a QR code. This code will link to text versions of the statements on the ministry’s official website, providing an additional layer of verification.

Addressing Critical Issues :

Victoria Shi is set to address various issues, including consular services, which have recently become a contentious topic in Ukraine. The country suspended such services last week for men of fighting age living abroad, requiring them to return to Ukraine for administrative procedures and potentially face the draft.

Pioneering a New Era in Diplomatic Communication :

Ukraine’s initiative to integrate an AI-powered digital spokesperson into its foreign ministry operations is a first-of-its-kind endeavor globally. By embracing advanced AI capabilities, Ukraine is not only enhancing its communication efficiency but also setting a precedent for how technology can be harnessed in governmental operations on a global scale.

As the world watches this innovative approach unfold, Ukraine’s bold step towards leveraging AI in diplomacy could pave the way for other nations to explore similar avenues, ushering in a new era of technological integration in diplomatic services.
