The Maharashtra government on Tuesday (31st January 2023) recognised ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha’ as the state song.

* The song will be adopted on February 19, the birth anniversary of the founder of the Maratha empire Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

* The decision was taken by the Maharashtra cabinet, headed by Chief Minister "Eknath Shinde".

* One of the iconic songs in Marathi,  ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha, Garja Maharashtra Majha’, which means ‘Glory to Maharashtra’, was penned by Raja Badhe and sung by balladeer Krishnarao Sable, popularly known as Shaheer Sable.

* “The song ‘Garja Maharashtra Majha’, which talks about the greatness of Maharashtra has been given the status of the state song.

* The original song is of four stanzas, but two stanzas will be given the status of the state song,” Cultural Affairs minister Sudhir Mungantiwar told reporters.

* The song will be sung on Maharashtra Foundation Day on May 1 after the national anthem.

* A statement said the song will also be sung or played in schools after the national anthem...

The unemployment rate in India has declined to a four-month low at 7.14% in January 2023, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) data has revealed.

* According to the data, the unemployment rate during December 2022 was 8.30%, while in November 2022, it was at 8% and 6.43% in September 2022.

* The data further showed that urban unemployment in January stood at 8.55%, while rural joblessness stood at 6.48%.

* States wise unemployment was the highest in Jammu and Kashmir at 21.8% closely followed by Haryana at 21.7% and Rajasthan at 21.1%. Joblessness in Delhi in January was at 16.7%, Goa at 16.2%, Assam at 16.1% and Tripura at 16%.

* As per the data unemployment was the lowest in states such as Chhattisgarh at 0.5% followed by Odisha at 1.5%, Tamil Nadu at 1.8% and Madhya Pradesh at 1.9%...

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) launched its WhatsApp chatbot on Wednesday with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, terming it an important initiative to make governance citizen-friendly.

The chatbot, called ‘Bal Mitra’, is an effort to enable two-way communication between people and the child rights panel.

The chatbot will help citizens and the commission to interact more effectively.

The government of Goa has launched the "Vision for All School Eye Health" program in partnership with OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and Prasad Netralaya.

* The programme is an extension of the current Vision for All Goa eye health program.

* The Vision for All Goa eye health program commenced in February 2021 and its monthly camps have screened 50,000 citizens as well as provided free spectacles to 16,000 people in need.

Legendary filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee K. Viswanath passed away in Hyderabad around midnight Thursday (2nd February 2023). He was 92.

* Viswanath was unwell for some time and was suffering from age-related issues.

* Popularly known as Kalatapasvi, Viswanath was born in 1930 in Andhra Pradesh and gained popularity in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films.

* A prominent name not just in Telugu cinema but also in Tamil and Hindi films, he became the 48th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema. He was conferred with the award for the year 2016.

* Viswanath, who started his journey as a sound artiste, directed award-winning films such as "Sankarabharanam", "Sagara Sangamam", "Swati Mutyam", "Saptapadi", "Kaamchor", "Sanjog" and "Jaag Utha Insaan" in his long career that included an equally successful stint in front of the camera.

* Viswanath, who made 50 movies since 1965, was a celebrated filmmaker in the Telugu film industry. He had also been active in Tamil and Hindi cinema.

* He debuted as a director with "Aatma Gowravam", which starred Akkineni Nageswara Rao and won the Nandi Award for the best feature film.

* The filmmaker followed it with "Chelleli Kapuram", "O Seeta Katha", "Jeevana Jyoti" and "Sarada".

* Viswanath also ventured into mainstream acting, working in movies like "Swarabhishekam" (which he directed as well), "Pandurangadu", "Narasimha Naidu", "Lakshmi Narasimha" and "Seemasimham", "Kuruthipunal", "Kakkai Siraginilae" and "Bagavathi", among others.

The Biodiversity Management Committee, the panchayat of Chumathang village, along with SECURE Himalaya Project recently resolved to declare "Yaya Tso" as Ladakh’s first biodiversity heritage site (BHS) under the Biological Diversity Act.

Yaya Tso, known as birds' paradise for its beautiful lake located at an altitude of 4,820 metres, has been proposed as Ladakh’s first biodiversity heritage site (BHS).

The resolution was signed after multiple rounds of consultations between the village stakeholders and SECURE Himalaya project to declare the high-altitude lake and its catchment as a biodiversity heritage site.

The Secure Himalaya project is funded by the Global Environment Facility.

The proposed Yaya Tso site will have an approximate area of 60 square kilometers, which will also include the lake’s watershed, they said, adding Yaya Tso is among the most beautiful lakes in Ladakh...
