In a remarkable achievement, Delhi’s per capita income surged by over 14%, reaching Rs 4,44,768 in the current fiscal year. The latest Statistical Handbook-2023, released by the Economic and Statistics department of the Delhi government, highlights the capital’s outstanding socio-economic progress.


Key Economic Indicators :

* Per Capita Income Boom : Delhi’s per capita income experienced an impressive growth from Rs 3,89,529 to Rs 4,44,768, surpassing the national average by 158%.

* Public Services Milestones : The Kejriwal government achieved commendable benchmarks in the public services sector, with a notable enhancement in public transportation. An average of 41 lakh passengers daily commuted on buses in 2023.

* Electric Vehicle Leadership : Delhi is at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, boasting 7,200 buses on the streets, including 1,300 electric buses.

* Utilities Expansion : The number of electricity consumers increased by nearly 2.8 lakh, and over 1 lakh water connections were added in 2022-23.


Social Welfare Initiatives :

* Free Electricity Scheme : More than 3.41 crore electricity bills worth zero were generated, benefiting citizens under the free electricity scheme, offering free monthly usage up to 200 units.

* Minimum Wages Leadership : Delhi has the highest minimum wages in the country, with increases every six months – Rs 17,494 for unskilled, Rs 19,279 for semi-skilled, and Rs 21,215 for skilled workers.

* Social Care Prioritization : The Kejriwal government prioritizes care for seniors, daughters, and individuals with special needs, providing pensions, benefiting girls through the Ladli Scheme, and offering financial assistance to those with special needs.

* Covid-19 Financial Aid : In 2022-23, 11,570 individuals benefited from the Chief Minister’s Covid-19 Family Financial Assistance Scheme, showcasing the government’s commitment to citizens during challenging times.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated the ‘Indus Food 2024’, exhibition to showcase India's vibrant and diverse food ecosystem, being held in India Exposition Mart, Greater Noida. While delivering an inspiring address at the inauguration of the exhibition, the Minister praised India's diverse food industry, emphasizing its potential to captivate global markets.

Speaking on India's food processing sector, Shri Goyal highlighted the 150% growth in processed food exports over the last nine years. The Minister highlighted that India’s agricultural exports stood at an aggregate of about US$ 53 Billion. Shri Piyush Goyal quoted the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and said that the time has come for a fusion of technology and taste. He emphasized the need for large-scale food processing, product branding, and export focus to provide better value to farmers, generate employment, and enhance the country's earnings.

The Minister recognized the burgeoning demand for Indian foods globally, he underscored the country's diverse agro-climatic zones, 158 food and agri Geographical Indications (GIs), and the identification of 708 unique food items across districts under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative.


He lauded the success of food security initiatives of the government such as the 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', providing free food grains to 81 Crore people and ensuring zero starvation deaths in the country. Additionally, he commended efforts to mitigate food inflation through strategic interventions like ‘Bharat Atta’ and ‘Bharat Dal’.

The Minister highlighted India's economic strengths as the fastest-growing large economy, attributing the success to solid macroeconomic foundations and a youthful demographic dividend. He credited social media and global influencers for promoting Indian culinary delights, leading to a surge in the popularity of diverse regional cuisines. Shri Piyush Goyal highlighted the richness of Indian cuisine, noting its distinctive flavors, spices, and aromas.

Shri Goyal stressed the vital role of women in the food sector and emphasized the need for industry-wide collaboration and cooperation while maintaining a competitive spirit. He urged the industry to focus on frozen, packaged, and ready-to-eat foods, encouraging skill development, university exchange programs, and startups in the sector. The Minister urged the industry to prioritize quality, nutrition, organic ingredients, and eco-friendly packaging, underscoring the significance of promoting food nutrition and sustainability.


Shri Piyush Goyal praised the significant success and outstanding achievements of the seventh edition of Indus Food, hailing it as the epicenter for food and beverage excellence in South Asia. He highlighted the international prominence of the event, revealing plans for India Global Culinary Exchange, welcoming 20 top international chefs to experience the country's culinary excellence firsthand.

Expressing confidence in India's capacity to host the world's largest fairs, the Minister emphasized Delhi's potential as a global hub for various expos. He shed light on the ongoing Aatmanirbhar Bharat Utsav at Bharat Mandapam and announced the upcoming Bharat Mobility in the following month, followed by Bharat Tex at the end of February 2024. He shared his vision for these events to lay the groundwork for even larger exhibitions in the coming years. Ministry of Tourism (MoT) in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) launched the fifth training under the Amrit Dharohar Capacity Building Scheme on 6th January 2024 for local community members, boat owners, and Forest department officials of Chilika Lake in the presence of Dr Sagnik Chowdhury, Regional Director (East), Ministry of Tourism, Dr M Ramesh, Scientist ‘E’, MoEF&CC, Dr Md Sabir Hussain, Nodal officer and Head, IITTM Bhubaneswar, Dr Amlan Naik, DFO Chilka Wildlife Division and Addl CEO, Chilika Development Authority (CDA), and other officials from CDA, and Forest Department, Govt of Odisha.

Under this initiative, two training programmes of 15 days each namely Alternative Livelihood program (ALP), and Paryatan Navik Certificate (PNC) will be conducted. With the help of the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) a total of 60 participants (30 for each course) were identified from the local communities in and around Chilika Lake to impart trainings and subsequently certifying them as nature-guides.


This is part of the ongoing effort of enhancing livelihood opportunities for local communities through harnessing the nature-tourism potential of the Ramsar Sites across the country under the Amrit Dharohar Initiative of the MoEF&CC.

In the first phase of this programme, five priority Ramsar sites were identified namely Sultanpur National Park, Sirpur wetland, Yashwant Sagar, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Chilika Lake. The first three training programmes for Sultanpur National Park, Sirpur wetland, and Yashwant Sagar have been successfully completed in December 2023 and the fourth training that was inaugurated on 5th January 2024 is currently undergoing..

Tata Power announced (8th Jan 2024) a ₹70,000-crore investment to develop 10 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power capacity in Tamil Nadu over the next five to seven years. This ambitious project aligns with the power giant's vision of achieving 70 per cent clean and green energy production by 2030 and complete carbon neutrality by 2040, according to a report by Economic Times.

Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha unveiled the plan at the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Chennai on January 8. Sinha emphasised the crucial role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change and securing a sustainable future for India.


Tata Power's Renewable Energy Portfolio :


Tata Power has an installed capacity of 982 MW wind power generation with plants spread across seven states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, leading in promoting wind power generation in India, according to the company's website.


Additionally, Tata Power Solar has a portfolio of more than 11.5 GWp of ground-mount utility-scale, over 1.7 GW of rooftop and distributed ground-mounted systems, and over 1 lakh solar water pumps in India.

The stocks of Tata Power were trading in the green, up 0.13 per cent at ₹341.15, on BSE at 2:18 pm on January 8, 2024.

Tata Power's share price bottomed out at around ₹185 apiece level on the NSE at the end of March 2023, and since then, it has remained an ideal 'buy on dips' stock for investors. In the last two months, Tata Power's share price has been touching new highs regularly, and the share has delivered over 80 per cent return to its long-term investors in the current fiscal, as reported by Livemint earlier.

Meanwhile, India's renewable energy capacity crossed the 179.5 GW mark, making the country the 4th largest player globally in wind and solar power. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (4th Jan 2024) urged farmers to cultivate pulses on a large scale to reduce dependency on imports. He assured them that the two cooperatives, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF) would procure produce at a minimum support price or the market price.

* Mr. Shah inaugurated a "tur dal procurement portal" through which farmers can register and sell their produce to NAFED and NCCF. A similar facility will be launched in future for urad and masoor farmers as well as maize farmers, he said.


* The Minister also transferred via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) about ₹68 lakh to 25 farmers towards payment for sale of tur via the portal.

* After the launch, the Minister said that before the sowing operation, tur farmers can register on the portal to sell their produce to NAFED and NCCF.

* The country is still dependent on the import of some varieties of pulses except for chana and moong, the Minister said. “By December 2027, the country should become self-reliant in pulses. We will not import even one kilo of pulses from January 2028,” he added..
