Airline EasyJet and aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce said Monday(28th Nov 2022) they had successfully tested a hydrogen-powered aircraft engine, in what the British companies described as a world first for aviation.

Green hydrogen is widely seen as better for the environment than jet fuel.

In a joint statement, the companies said they had “set a new aviation milestone with the world’s first run of a modern aero engine on hydrogen”, in a test carried out on land this month.

The company tested a turboprop fan engine that is used on small regional flights aircrafts. Green hydrogen for the tests had been generated using tidal and wind energy from Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

Rolls-Royce hopes to eventually conduct a full-scale ground test of a Pearl 15 jet engine.

Britain’s minister for business and energy, Grant Shapps, lauded Monday’s news as “a true British success story”, adding it was “a prime example of how we can work together to make aviation cleaner while driving jobs across the country”.

“We are pushing the boundaries to discover the zero carbon possibilities of hydrogen, which could help reshape the future of flight,” said Grazia Vittadini, chief technology officer at Rolls-Royce.

Britain earlier this year identified the need for major investment to help unlock green hydrogen from water using renewable energy.

Blue hydrogen, which is far more available than its greener alternative, is opposed by environmentalists as it is produced from natural gas in a process releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere..

International Jaguar Day was created to raise awareness about the increasing threats facing the jaguar and the critical conservation efforts ensuring its survival from Mexico to Argentina.

Observed annually on November 29, International Jaguar Day celebrates the Americas’ largest wild cat as an umbrella species for biodiversity conservation and an icon for sustainable development and the centuries-old cultural heritage of Central and South America.

History : International Jaguar Day also represent the collective voice of jaguar range countries, in collaboration with national and international partners, to draw attention to the need to conserve jaguar corridors and their habitats as part of broader efforts to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

In March 2018 representatives from 14 range countries gathered in New York at United Nations’ Headquarters for the Jaguar 2030 Forum.

This Forum resulted in the creation of the Jaguar 2030 Statement which outlined a wide range of internationally collaborative jaguar conservation initiatives, including the proposal to create an International Jaguar Day.

Many range countries are also observing National Jaguar Day celebrations including Brazil, which has recognized the jaguar as its symbol for biodiversity.

Among the many voices that joined in this call for a Jaguar Day, was that of Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, co-founder and former CEO and Chief Scientist for Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization.

Known with respect and admiration as the “Jaguar Man” and the “Indiana Jones of Wildlife Protection”, Alan dedicated his life to the study and protection of jaguars and other big cats..

A UN panel has recommended that Australia's Great Barrier Reef should be listed as a world heritage site that is in danger.

It said, the world's biggest coral reef ecosystem was significantly impacted by climate change and warming of oceans.

The long-awaited report on the 10-day mission that took place in March said, climate change was presenting a serious challenge to the values that saw the reef inscribed as a global wonder in 1981.

However, Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said that the government would push UNESCO to not list the reef as endangered because climate change was threatening all coral reefs across the world.

In January, the Australian government announced a billion-dollar package to protect the reef..

Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare is commemorated on November 30. This internationally marked day was adopted by the United Nations to remember the victims of chemical warfare.

The day aims to encourage efforts for eliminating the use of chemical weapons and remember those who have suffered because of such warfare.

History : The first international agreement limiting the use of chemical weapons can be traced back to 1675. France and Germany had come to an agreement to prohibit the use of poison bullets. This agreement was signed in Strasbourg.

In 1874, the Brussels Convention on the Law and Customs of War was signed. It prohibited the employment of poison or poisoned weapons. However, the use of arms, projectiles or material to cause unnecessary suffering, though agreed upon, did not come into force.

The Hague Convention declared to ‘abstain from the use of projectiles, the sole object of which is the diffusion of asphyxiating or deleterious gasses’ in 1899. A second Hague Convention was agreed upon in 1907. It was to reiterate the earlier bans on employing poison or poisoned weapons.

According to the United Nations’ official website, chemical weapons were used as a weapon of mass destruction during World War I. As a result, there were more than 100 thousand fatalities and a million casualties.

While chemical weapons were not used during World War II, it was only after the war that several countries gradually came to the realization that having chemical weapons in their arsenals did not have much value compared to the threat they posed. This led the countries to look forward to a comprehensive ban.

The Chemical Weapons Convention was adopted in 1993. It came into force on April 29, 1997.

In 2005, the United Nations proclaimed November 30 as the Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare.

Significance : Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare memorializes those who have lost their lives to chemical warfare. It is a day to mourn and honour the lost lives, whether they of soldiers or civilians.

It is also a reminder of the cruelty of wars and how far we have come to safeguard the lives of future generations. But it is also a reminder of how much is still left to be done.

The day is also commemorated to raise awareness about chemical weapons and the international laws against them. Public awareness is raised about the dangers of these weapons of mass destruction and what can be done to establish peace..
