World Portuguese Language Day is commemorated annually on May 5 to promote the Portuguese language. It serves a role in uniting and preserving the culture and identity of the Portuguese people.

* Portuguese is one of the world’s most widely spoken languages. It is the most extensively spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere and has more than 265 million native speakers worldwide.

* This makes Portuguese the sixth most frequently spoken language in the planet. Let’s examine the history, culture, and impact of the Portuguese language on the remainder of the globe.

World Portuguese Language Day History :

* The intergovernmental organisation Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) designated May 5 as World Portuguese Language Day. Since 2000, C.P.L.P. has maintained an official partnership with UNESCO. However, it was not until the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2019 that the 5th of May was declared World Portuguese Language Day.

* Galician is the source of the Portuguese language’s origins. This was the native tongue of the people who resided in the northern regions of Portugal and northwest Spain. Galician was a combination of regional dialects and standard Latin. The language evolved over time, and around the 14th century, Portuguese emerged as its descendant. People who speak Portuguese are referred to as Lusophones. The preponderance of Lusophones currently reside in Brazil.

* Regional variations in the use of words and their meanings are one of the most intriguing aspects of the Portuguese language. Until 2009, the Portuguese alphabet consisted of only 23 letters, as the letters “K,” “W,” and “Y” did not exist in the language. The Portuguese-speaking countries signed a new “Orthographic Agreement” and adopted these letters in 2009. Numerous English words derive from the Portuguese language. Some examples of these words are’mosquito,’ ‘cobra,’ ‘fetish,”monsoon,”mango,”macaw,’ ‘coconut,’ and ‘breeze.’..

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced interest rate of 6.97 percent on Floating Rate Bond (FRB) 2024, for the half year starting from May 7 to November 6.

The rate of interest on the FRB 2024 shall be reset at the average rate (rounded off up to two decimal places) of the implicit yields, at the cut-off prices of the last three auctions of 182-days treasury bills, held up to the period preceding the coupon reset date, which is May 07, 2023, the RBI said in a release.

"The implicit yields will be computed by reckoning 365 days in a year, " it added.

Decoding floating rate bonds : Floating Rate Bonds are securities that do not have a fixed coupon rate. They have a variable coupon rate which is re-set at preannounced intervals. In other words, the interest rate of a floating rate bond keeps fluctuating throughout its tenure.

How is interest rate determined : Floating rate bonds have a variable interest rate linked to a predetermined benchmark rate and that can be anything ranging from the repo rate, the reverse repo, the average T-Bill rate or small savings schemes. It is reset at regular intervals.

These bonds carry a coupon with a base rate equivalent to a weighted average yield of the last three auctions of 182-day Treasury Bills (T-Bill) plus a fixed spread decided by way of auction.

Investment strategy : According to IIFL Securities, floating rate bonds are preferred by some investors because of their flexibility to reflect current interest rate of the market. If the interest rate of the benchmark rises, the interest rate payable for the floating rate bond rises too..

People in this age group with comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma or congestive heart failure are especially at risk.

* The FDA approved GSK’s RSV vaccine, to be sold as Arexvy, on the basis of phase III clinical-trial data submitted by the pharmaceutical company, which is based in London.

* Those data showed that the shot reduced the risk of people aged 60 and older developing lower respiratory tract disease from RSV by 82.6% and that of developing severe disease by 94.1%...
