In China, a startup named Betavolt has unveiled a revolutionary battery, asserting its capability to produce electricity for 50 years without requiring charging or maintenance.

According to The Independent, this innovation is a nuclear battery that has successfully integrated 63 isotopes into a module smaller than a coin. Betavolt claims that it is the world's first battery to achieve the miniaturization of atomic energy, challenging traditional notions associated with nuclear technology.

The battery's technology operates by transforming the energy generated through the decay of isotopes into electrical power. The startup has commenced preliminary testing and aims to scale up production of the battery for widespread use in commercial devices like smartphones and devices.

The startup said in a press release, "Betavolt atomic energy batteries can meet the needs of long-lasting power supply in multiple scenarios, such as aerospace, AI equipment, medical equipment, microprocessors, advanced sensors, small drones, and micro-robots."

Utilizing a layered design, the battery is engineered to mitigate the risk of catching fire or exploding under abrupt force, as asserted by Betavolt. The company also states that the battery demonstrates resilience in operating within a temperature range spanning from -60 degrees Celsius to 120 degrees Celsius.

The battery's dimensions are 15 x 15 x 5 millimeters, constructed from thin layers of nuclear isotopes and diamond semiconductors. Presently, the nuclear battery produces 100 microwatts of power at 3 volts. The objective is to achieve a power output of 1 watt by the year 2025.

While concerns about radiation often accompany nuclear energy, Betavolt seeks to allay such fears by asserting the safety of its battery, assuring users of its lack of external radiation. Following the decay period, the 63 isotopes within the battery undergo a transformation into a stable, non-radioactive isotope of copper, eliminating any environmental threats..

Correct Answer :   Luxembourg

Luxembourg has dislodged Mauritius to become the region with the third-largest assets under custody. Its AUC grew 30 per cent last year to ?4.85 lakh crore, with its equity assets now second only to the US.

Investments from Mauritius dipped nine per cent to ?3.9 trillion during the year amid greater regulatory oversight on the island nation. The tax treaty between India and Mauritius was renegotiated a few years back post which capital gains on sale of shares was made fully taxable after April 1, 2019.

Since 2020, Luxembourg’s prominence has increased following virtual meetings between European and Indian leaders, resulting in three financial agreements to bolster trade relations, according to experts. Out of more than 3,000 FPI accounts from Europe (excluding the UK), approximately 1,400 originate from Luxembourg.

“With the evolving regulations for foreign investments in India, Luxembourg stands on a stronger footing as it is better-regulated compared to tax havens,” said Manoj Purohit, Partner & Leader, Financial Services Tax, BDO India.

According to Neha Malviya Kulkarni, Chief Growth Officer, SuperNAV, an international fund set-up advisory, Luxembourg has long been the top choice for European investors, hosting some of the world’s largest FPIs. The recent surge in AUM, however, can be linked to investors seeking new fund locations beyond the traditional ones that have come under a cloud given the greater scrutiny of tax-havens, she said.

“Luxembourg is well regarded for its capabilities in setting up market-centric structures, tax incentives and expertise. The Indo-Luxembourg interactions since 2020 have only increased, including the engagement with GIFT City,” said Viraj Kulkarni, founder and CEO, Pivot Management Consultancy (PMC).

Another notable gainer last year was France, which entered the top ten club after more than a year. The country’s AUC has grown over 74 per cent to ?1.88 lakh crore.

“Changes in the geopolitical environment with events like Brexit and beneficial tax treatment on investments, especially for those investing under the FPI route, has been instrumental for the growth of such portfolio investors,” said Purohit.

According to the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and France, gains for the alienation of shares of a company forming part of a participation of at least ten per cent in a company which is a resident of India will be taxed in India and vice versa.

“For holdings less than ten per cent, capital gains might not occur in India upon such transfers. Investors may want to benefit from these favourable provisions in the DTAA,” said SuperNAV’s Kulkarni.

Ireland and Norway have both moved up one position, now ranking fifth and seventh, respectively, among the jurisdictions.

Ireland is popular because of its tax efficiencies and global reach. Irish’s regulated funds are exempt from Irish tax on income and gains derived from their investments.

Canada slipped one place even as its AUC grew 19 per cent year-on-year. It is unclear if the diplomatic row between India and Canada has, in any way, impacted investments.

“We see more inflows coming from France, Luxembourg and Cyprus going forward,” said PMC’s Kulkarni..

The rankings aimed to support regions in developing their startup ecosystems, with Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya identified as top performers.

The ‘leader’ category included Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur, and Tripura. Goyal also encouraged startups to leverage DPIIT’s support for intellectual property rights registration, including patents and trademarks.

With over 1,800 recognized startups granted patents, the total number of recognized startups has exceeded 1.17 lakh, according to DPIIT Joint Secretary Sanjiv. The Assam government recently launched a financial assistance scheme, the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan (MMUA), with the aim of empowering rural women entrepreneurs. The program is designed to provide financial assistance to women who aspire to embark on their entrepreneurial journey independently, beyond their association with Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative introduces unique conditions, focusing specifically on the number of eligible children for the beneficiaries.

Objectives of MMUA Scheme :

The MMUA scheme is designed to promote the development of rural women who are part of self-help groups. It aims to transform them into “Rural Micro Entrepreneurs” with an annual income target of ?1 lakh per member.

Eligibility Criteria: Balancing Family Planning and Entrepreneurship :

To qualify for the grant, women from the general and other backward caste (OBC) categories must have no more than three children. However, specific exemptions are made for women from the Moran, Muttock, and tea-tribe communities, who can apply with four or fewer children. For women belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) categories, the eligibility criteria dictate that they should have no more than four children.

Child Limitations :

* General and OBC Women : Eligibility is limited to three children.
* ST and SC : Maximum benefit for up to four children.
* Morans, Motoks, and ‘Tea Tribes’ : Maximum of four children.

Additional Conditions for Beneficiaries :

Apart from child limitations, beneficiaries must fulfill two additional conditions:

Education of Girls : If beneficiaries have daughters, they must be enrolled in school. For girls not attending school, a signed commitment for future enrollment is necessary.

Tree Plantation Campaign : Beneficiaries need to ensure that the trees planted under the government’s tree plantation campaign, Amrit Brikshya Andolan, are thriving.

Phase One: Seed Funding for Entrepreneurial Dreams :

In the inaugural phase of the MMUA, each eligible applicant will receive a grant of ?10,000 in the first year. This seed funding is intended to facilitate the initiation of various business ventures, chosen from a curated list of 145 business plans prepared by the government. The financial allocation for this scheme is unprecedented, with ?3,900 crore earmarked in the state’s annual budget, making it the most substantial initiative of its kind in Assam.

Phase Two: Strengthening Financial Support :

In the second year of the MMUA, successful applicants will receive further support in the form of a bank loan amounting to ?12,500, coupled with an equivalent grant from the state government. The disbursement of funds in the second year will be contingent upon a thorough evaluation of the previous year’s utilization of the granted amount. This ensures accountability and responsible use of the financial assistance provided.
