The Henley Passport Index for 2024 has been released, and India slipped one rank down from last year (2023) to 85th. The index ranks 199 nations based on the strength of their passports, and in 2024, France has topped the list, as its passport provides visa-free access to 194 countries.

India slipped one notch down from last year to 85th even as the countries with visa-free access to Indians increased to 62 from 60 in 2023. The rank of political crisis-hit Pakistan remained the same as last year, at 106, while Bangladesh's position slipped from 101 in 2023 to 102 this year.

Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain are the other countries that are standing alongside France on the top.

Interestingly, the Maldives, India's maritime neighbour, was ranked 58th with its citizens having visa-free access to 96 countries.

In geopolitics, the strength of a country's passport is a significant metric to measure its soft power. A strong passport allows citizens to freely travel across the globe without requiring a visa.

China witnessed a marginal jump in its ranking from 66 in 2023 to 64 this year, as the country granted visa-free access to many European nations to revive its tourism sector in a post-pandemic economy. The ranking of the United States jumped from 7th to 6th position even as its anti-immigration stance seems to be a polarising issue in the upcoming Presidential elections.

Henley Passport Index Methodology

“With historical data spanning 19 years, the Henley Passport Index is the only one of its kind based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. Updated monthly, the Henley Passport Index is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states when assessing where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum," the Henley Passport Index said on its website while sharing the details around its data.

The rankings denote that global mobility underwent a significant transformation over the last two decades as in 2006 people could travel visa-free to only 58 countries on average. However, the number has almost doubled to 111 countries this year (2024)..

Shubman Gill has been appointed as state icon of Punjab for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C announced on Monday that the star Indian batter will engage in various election campaigns to generate voter awareness and increase the turnout in the state.

Gill's popularity has grown multi-fold over the IPL 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023 and the state election chief aims to use that as the poll panel has set the target of "Is Vaar 70 Paar".

Punjab had recorded a voter turnout of 65.96 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls for the 13 seats. The CEO said Punjab resident Gill, popular among sports enthusiasts, especially the youth, has been appointed as a "state icon" for the polls.

Sibin C said that in a meeting with all deputy commissioners of Punjab on Friday (16th Feb 2024), they were asked to identify such areas where the voting percentage was low during the last elections. He said that awareness campaigns and appeals made by Gill in such areas.

The CEO expressed hope that the first-time voters would be influenced by Shubman Gill and Tarsem Jassar, and exercise their franchise, while also appealing to the people of other age groups to vote in large numbers. The Lok Sabha polls are likely to be held in April-May.

During the third Test match against England where India registered it's biggest Test victory, Shubman Gill missed out on a deserving ton by nine runs. The overnight pair of Gill and Kuldeep Yadav (27) frustrated England for about an hour until they were separated, adding 55 runs for the fourth wicket.

Kuldeep appeared to be busier and more aggressive than his partner Gill, using his feet well to hit Tom Hartley (1/78) for a six on one occasion. However, a miscommunication between the two resulted in Gill being run out nine runs short of what would have been his fourth Test century and second for the series.

Kuldeep hit one from Hartley firmly towards wide mid-on and took a couple of paces for a run, but Ben Stokes was swift in getting to the ball and firing it to the bowler who broke the stumps. Gill, who was quick to set off, made a desperate dive in return after being asked to turn back and fell a few inches short of the crease. The India No 3 made 91 from 151 balls with nine fours and two sixes before his progression got abruptly cut off.

The disappointment was evident for the two Indians with Gill making his frustration evident while trudging off the field and Kuldeep, who had turned back his partner, collapsing on his haunches with his head bowed down. Kuldeep's 91-ball vigil finally ended when he edged one from Rehan Ahmed (1/64) to Joe Root at first slip..

The Bharat Mart facility in Dubai, which has been compared to China’s Dragon Mart, will be built by DP World and is expected to be operational by 2025.

The foundation stone of Bharat Mart, which will combine retail, warehousing and logistics facilities at Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone in Dubai, was laid during a virtual ceremony by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) vice president, Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, on Wednesday (14th Feb 2024).

Bharat Mart is a joint initiative of DP World, a Dubai-based multinational that specialises in logistics, port terminal operations and maritime services, and India’s commerce ministry that is aimed at boosting exports by Indian small and medium-sized enterprises.

The facility, which has been compared to China’s Dragon Mart, will be built by DP World and is expected to be operational by 2025. The facility, set to cover more than 100,000 sq metres, will help cut the cost and time for shipping goods from India to Africa and Europe.

Modi and Mohamed bin Rashid, who is also the UAE prime minister and ruler of Dubai, expressed confidence that Bharat Mart will further enhance India-UAE trade by leveraging Jebel Ali Port’s strategic location and strength in logistics, the external affairs ministry said in a statement.
