Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Shri Giriraj Singh launched the ‘Campaign on Promoting Digital Transactions in 50000 Gram Panchayats' under the AmritMahotsav in Lucknow on 25th May 2023.

* The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India is running a “Campaign on Promoting Digital Transactions in 50000 Gram Panchayats” which started from 1st February 2023 and will continue till 15 August 2023 under the AzadiKaAmritMahotsav.

* The key thrust of the campaign is to promote Digital Transactions in rural areas, particularly among women.

* Launching the campaign, Shri Giriraj Singh, Minister for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Govt. of India lauded SHG’s NPA coming down from 9.58 % in 2013 percent to below 2% now under the inspirational leadership of  PM Shri Narendra Modi and urged banks to recognize the outstanding credit repayment performance of SHGs and facilitate higher loans for them.

* Acknowledging the contribution of BC Sakhis in digital transactions, where India is emerging as the Global leader under PM Modi’s visionary initiatives, Minister added that India is setting global examples in women empowerment too.

* Addressing the audience, Chief Minister of  Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath highlighted that with the digital transformation brought about by BC Sakhis in UP alone to the tune of 5 Crore 57 lakh transactions, they have not only ensured last mile  doorstep banking across villages, but also helped banks save costs on low volume transactions.

* CM also lauded BC Sakhis who helped rural masses encash over Rs 75,000 Crore of Government DBT. CM added that in the digital Gram Sachivalays being created by Govt. of UP in villages, each will be having provision of offering services of Bank Sakhis too..

Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that India will unveil its new 18 petaflop supercomputer for weather forecasting institutes later this year (2023), said on Wednesday (24th May 2023).

* Rijiju made the announcement after a visit to the ministry's National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida near.

* The NCMRWF houses 'Mihir', a 2.8 petaflop supercomputer, while the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, is home to 'Pratyush', a 4.0 petaflop supercomputer.

* "The new supercomputer will be bought at a cost of Rs 900 crore," Rijiju told reporters at NCMRWF.

* According to the arrangement arrived at by the ministry, NCMRWF will be allocated eight petaflop supercomputing power with the remaining 10 petaflops going to IITM.

* The Pune-based institute requires higher supercomputing power as it deals with seasonal weather forecasts while the NCMRWF deals with medium-range forecasts for a period extending three to seven days in advance.

* The new high-power computing facility is expected to improve weather forecasts at the block level, help weather scientists give higher resolution ranges of forecast, predict cyclones with more accuracy and lead time and ocean state forecast, including marine water quality forecast.

* "Presently, we give forecasts with a 12-kilometre resolution. The new supercomputer will improve it to six-kilometre resolution.

* Our aim is to achieve one-kilometre resolution forecasts," Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran said..

The Indian government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Thursday (25th May 2023) signed a $141.12 million loan agreement aimed at supporting the development of high-quality internal infrastructure in three industrial clusters in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

* The loan will be utilized to enhance road networks, water supply systems, and electricity distribution networks, fostering industrialization and job creation in the targeted areas.

* “This financing is the second tranche of the $500 million multi-tranche financing facility (MFF) for the program approved by ADB in 2016 to build infrastructure in three industrial clusters in the Visakhapatnam and Srikalahasthi-Chittoor nodes in the state," the Ministry of Finance said.

* By adopting a multi-sectoral approach, the ADB financing aims to boost manufacturing, improve competitiveness, and increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to Andhra Pradesh’s gross domestic product.

* The funds will be utilized to strengthen industrial infrastructure in the Visakhapatnam node, including the development of internal infrastructure in the Rambilli and Nakkapalli industrial clusters spanning 160 hectares and 441 hectares, respectively.

* Additionally, the project will involve widening a 13.8-kilometer stretch of the Atchuthapuram–Anakapalli road and improving a 4.4-kilometer access road to the Nakkapalli cluster.

* In the Srikalahasthi-Chittoor node, the loan will support the development of the Chittoor-South industrial cluster, covering an area of 938 hectares, and enhance access roads to both the Chittoor-South and Naidupeta industrial clusters...

* Justice Vaidyanathan was born in Coimbatore on August 17, 1962. He did his schooling in Singaram Pillai High School Villivakkam, Chennai. After his graduation in B A (Economics) from D G Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, during 1979-1982, he joined the Madras Law College (now known as Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Government Law College) in 1982.

* After receiving his postgraduate diploma in personnel management, labour welfare and industrial relations in 1986, he enrolled as an advocate in August 1986.

* Justice S Vaidyanathan started his career in the high court, where his paternal grandfather L S Vaidyanathan served as superintendent in the copyist section and retired in 1952. His father V Subramanian was a shoe polish seller who later grew to be a trade unionist. His father's efforts led to the formation of Madras Commercial Employees Union in Chennai in 1946.

* Justice Vaidyanathan also served as an editor of Labour Law Books published by Madras Book Agency and was elevated as an additional judge of the high court on October 25, 2013 and became a permanent judge on April 14, 2015...
