India resumed e-visa services to Canadian nationals on Wednesday (22nd Nov 2023).

The Indian Mission in Canada temporarily halted visa services until further notice due to operational reasons, as noted by BLS International.

BLS International Services Limited, an Indian outsourcing service provider, oversees government and diplomatic missions globally. The company specializes in managing services such as visa processing, passport services, consular assistance, document attestation, and citizen services.

“Important notice from Indian Mission: Due to operational reasons, with effect from September 21, 2023, Indian visa services have been suspended till further notice. Please keep checking the BLS website for further updates," the BLS website said.

In October, India opted to recommence visa services in Canada for four specific categories following a thorough assessment of the security situation, taking into consideration recent measures implemented by Canada.

The categories include entry visa, business visa, medical visa, and conference visa, and the resumption of services was effective from October 26.

Following the development, Canada welcomed India's decision to partially resume visa services calling it a “good sign" and stating that the suspension should “never have happened in the first place".

Significantly, in the midst of a diplomatic dispute with Canada, India suspended its visa services in September, citing an indefinite hiatus. This move followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's accusation of the involvement of "agents of the Indian government" in the June killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, identified as a designated terrorist in India, was gunned down outside a Gurdwara in a parking area in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, on June 18..

World Fisheries Day is celebrated annually on November 21st to highlight the importance of sustainable fisheries management and to draw attention to the crucial role of small-scale fishers in ensuring food security and livelihoods for millions around the world.

World Fisheries Day 2023 Theme :

* The theme for World Fisheries Day 2023 is “Build enabling policy environments for small-scale artisanal fisheries.”

* This theme emphasizes the crucial role of small-scale fishers in sustainable fisheries management. Small-scale fishers, who often employ traditional and low-impact fishing methods, contribute significantly to local food security and livelihoods. They also possess valuable knowledge and expertise in managing marine resources sustainably.

* By supporting small-scale fishers and enabling their participation in policymaking processes, we can promote more equitable and sustainable fisheries management practices.

History of World Fisheries Day :

* The history of World Fisheries Day can be traced back to 1997 when the World Forum on Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF) met in New Delhi. This gathering of representatives from 18 countries resulted in the establishment of the World Fisheries Forum and the signing of a declaration advocating for a global mandate of sustainable fishing practices and policies.

* In recognition of the growing importance of addressing fisheries issues, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the WFF jointly proposed the establishment of an international day dedicated to fisheries. This proposal was subsequently adopted by the FAO General Assembly in 2003, officially designating November 21st as World Fisheries Day.

* Since its inception, this day has played a pivotal role in raising global awareness about the critical role of fisheries in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. It has also served as a platform for promoting responsible fisheries management practices, addressing challenges such as overfishing, illegal fishing, and climate change impacts.

Significance of World Fisheries Day :

* Fisheries play a vital role in global food security and nutrition, providing over 20% of the animal protein intake for nearly 3 billion people worldwide. However, overfishing, climate change and pollution have posed significant threats to the sustainability of fisheries, endangering marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishers.

* World Fisheries Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about these challenges and promote responsible fisheries management practices that balance conservation with the needs of fishing communities..
