Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned on Tuesday(9th Aug 2022) breaking his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kumar, earlier in the day, held a meeting with the JD(U) leaders to discuss his next future political moves. He then sought time from Governor Phagu Chauhan.

He also submitted a support letter of 160 MLAs to stake claims to form a new government. In the 243-member assembly, the BJP has 77 lawmakers and JD (U) 45. The RJD is currently the single-largest party with 79 MLAs, Congress 19 and the CPI(ML)-led Left Front 17.

Nitish Kumar left for the residence of RDJ patriarch Lalu Yadav’s wife Rabri Devi in Patna to hold talks with Tejashwi Yadav, who is likely to get the deputy chief minister’s post in the new coalition government.

Why does this happen?
The tensions between the JD(U) and BJP, which kept simmering as the latter’s state-level leaders were accused of taking potshots at the CM, reached a breaking point after JD(U) leader RCP Singh was accused by a section of the party of conspiring to create a split..

Nagasaki Day is observed every year on August 9th to promote peace among nations and to create awareness about the devastating results of nuclear weapons. The day is also observed to remember innocent civilians who lost their lives in the devastation of nuclear blasts during World War II. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped the second atom bomb, named 'Fat Man' on Japan's Nagasaki.

This came three days after Hiroshima was devastated by the first uranium bomb, coded 'Little Boy', on August 6th, leaving over 74,000 people dead. Recently, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to abandon nuclear weapons, stating that they are "a deadly reminder of countries' inability to solve problems through dialogue and collaboration".

History and significance : Japan was still trying to recover from the shock of the first atom bombing at Hiroshima on August 6. Just three days after, it was again shaken by another nuclear bombing in Nagasaki by the United States.

The 4.5-ton plutonium bomb code name 'Fat Man' was dropped at 11.02 am on August 9, 1945, by the US B029 bomber Bockscar. When the bomb hit the ground, the temperature of the surface reached 4,000 degrees Celsius, and radioactive rain poured down. This claimed the lives of over 80,000 people living in the hills surrounding the city and nearby by the end of 1945.

This attack forced the nation to kneel down during the Second World War. After six days after the Nagasaki bombing, the Japanese Emperor Gyokuon-Hoso's speech was broadcast to the nation, addressing the surrender.

Both the bombings claimed the lives of over 140,000 people out of the total estimated population of 3.5 lakh. Later, the death toll kept rising due to injuries and radiation-related deaths.

The bomb named 'Fat Man', which destroyed the city of Nagasaki was more powerful than the bomb 'Little Boy' used in Hiroshima. It weighed around 10,000 pounds and was built to produce a 22-kiloton blast. Somehow, the effect of the blast at Nagasaki was mitigated, and destruction was limited to 2.6 square miles because the city lies in the valleys between mountains..

Gustavo Petro has sworn in as the first leftist President of  Colombia.

Colombia's first leftist President was sworn into office Sunday(7th Aug 2022), promising to fight inequality and heralding a turning point in the history of a country haunted by a long war between the government and guerrilla groups.

Sen. Gustavo Petro, a former member of Colombia's M-19 guerrilla group, won the presidential election in June 2022 by beating conservative parties that offered moderate changes to the market-friendly economy, but failed to connect with voters frustrated by rising poverty and violence against human rights leaders and environmental groups in rural areas.

Mr. Petro is part of a growing group of leftist politicians and political outsiders who have been winning elections in Latin America since the pandemic broke out and hurt incumbents who struggled with its economic aftershocks.

He also promised to implement outstanding provisions of the 2016 peace agreement that saw the rebel FARC movement lay down arms after nearly six decades of civil conflict..
